Abhijnana Shakuntalam KALIDASA

Ujjwal Pathak English (Hons.)

Q: Significance of the ‘Ring’ and ‘Curse’ in the play ‘Abhijnana Shakuntalam’.

Ans: ‘Abhijnana Shakuntalam’ or the “Loom of Time” is a play which tells us the love story of Shakuntala and Dushyant. The play follows the outline of the epic drama but the whole structure of the play is a sophisticated Dramatic form. Before going further in details regarding the question I would like to specify how the ring justifies the title of the play, ‘Abhijnana’ means ‘recognition’, therefore the title of the play is recognition of Shakuntala and the ring plays an important role in the loss of identity and the recognition of Shakuntala in the eyes of king Dushyant, our hero of the play. I would like to clarify what is the ring concept, what was the curse and how the ring and the curse relate to each other. The ring was the token of love given to Shakuntala by Dushyant. The curse was given by Durvasa rishi to Shakuntala that she will not be recognized by her beloved, later on this curse was diluted and she was recognized by Dushyant. Now this ring which was a token of love suddenly is transformed into an instrument through which Dushyant forgets and then recognizes Shakuntala later on thus fulfilling the curse of Durvasa. In short we can say that the curse acts as an impediment to the action and the ring acts as the token of recognition to resolve the problem. In this drama not only are nature, flora and fauna made

Watching movies is a great way to learn and study different interpersonal relationships. A lot of them are just like real life situations that happen every day between people. One of my favorite movies is Love and Basketball. I chose to talk about this movie because in my opinion it really focuses on the relationship of the two main characters. There are good moments and bad ones in their relationship with one another. I also believe there are a lot of different things the characters could have done and said that would have made communicating with each other a lot easier. It’s one of my favorite movies and I have learned a lot about communicating from it.…

The Curse of The Opal Stone The superstition that Opal stones are evil originates from the novel ‘Anne of Geierstein’ written by Sir Walter Scott. In the novel Lady Hermione was falsely accused of being a demon, after holy water falls onto her opal jewelry and it changes its colour. This book effected the general public’s view of the Opal stone so much so that the Opal market completely went to shreds and Opal prices dropped by 50%. If this seems completely ludicrous, Google it. As time progressed this belief has slowly began to die down, however many people still chose to believe in the old superstition, southern European and middle eastern jewelers still refuse to carry opals.…

Have you ever been an option to someone you considered your choice? Are you tired of acting like a fool to someone that really matters to you? Would you still allow yourself to be in this kind of situation? In life, we are expected to play our own game. There are always winners and losers, but sometimes there are also cheaters. A player is one concrete example of this certain type. Traditionally, a player is “a person who plays a game” (Merriam-Webster, 2012). However, the meaning of player nowadays has basically evolved into something else. They are into a variety of sports even in the game called love. Men are often the ones involved in this merciless act. A player brings harm to people but can be prevented if people are aware of his personal characteristics, knowledgeable of his actions’ causes and effects, and observant of the similarities and differences between him and a true lover.…

There is a great deal of similarity between the play and the novel. To begin with, both of them are adaptations of the previously existing stories. In the case of the play the source was an episode from the Mahabharata whilst for the novel the source was a set of papers found by the author about a woman who lived about two hundred years ago (from novelist’s time) in New England. The protagonists in both the literary masterpieces are women, Śakuntalā and Hester Prynne respectively. They both are characterised as sweet, loving women, trustful, forging despite cruelest breaches of confidence – models of devoted wives with their reserve endurance of sorrow and spiritual discipline. Śakuntalā entered into a “gandharva vivaha” (an instant marriage by mutual consent of participants only, without any need for even a single third person as witness) with Dushyanta whilst her counterpart Hester was involved in a secret albeit sinful (in the puritanical society) relationship with Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale. A component each of King Dushyanta’s character can be viewed at as the traits of the…
