If power is expressed towards associates one is managing, based on the theories presented in this chapter, the longevity of the employees’ career under your leadership is not going to last. Certainly, your staff will, in the short term, perform and do what is asked. However, if you aren’t serving your associates and taking care of them, eventually there is going to be damage in those relationships and lack of performance and trust. There are some very clear testimonies within this chapter that stuck with me. For instance, when James is discussing his love/hate relationship with his first boss. It is being able to place a circle of power at your own feet and not take power from someone else’s circle.” In John Knowles A Separate Peace Finny has the power to do whatever he set his mind to without having to second guess himself or listen to what others tell him. Finny’s physical attributes and popularity made him someone that others looked up to and someone who wasn’t ever bothered. In the form of his roommate Gene however it didn’t come so naturally. Gene wasn’t like Finny so what Gene would do was try and be more powerful by becoming more like Finny. Similar to Finny, R.P McMurphy was also a powerful man in his own way. In Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest McMurphy’s attitude and actions make him someone for the other people in the mental institution to look up to. His power of resisting Nurse Ratched was one that other patients tried to develop and want to do on their own. What the quote states is something that I agree with and is seen through out novels in history.     The term power can be defined different ways but our text, Organizational Behavior (2012), maintains that “power is the ability to influence the behaviors of others using formal and informal means” (Baack, 2012). Power does not necessarily have to equate with results; a powerful person can lead an organization or offer their opinion to others who, based on the speaker/leaders inherent power, will respond accordingly. Power also describes “any ability to do something, including abilities of non-human agents. So we speak of the ‘power of an engine or a machine’, the ‘power of speech’ or ‘the power of the West’” (Hamilton, 2013). The primary distinction between power and domination is that one person or group has the power to do something versus the power over something or someone else. Oftentimes, leaders such as managers or organizational heads, take the power of their position and further it to that of a dominator who commands their subordinates, offers ultimatums, and manages in an autocratic sometimes tyrannical manner. Power and domination can work concurrently if balance is employed. A leader can take the power of their position to agreeably get subordinates to perform in a specific manner – the balancing act is exercising both power and domination in a way that isn’t abrasive, by figuring out a way to make employees or subordinates feel involved in the decision-making and action processes.…
