What is the Battle of the Coral Sea? This battle was a part of World War II and was fought from May 4-8 in 1942. This was a major battle in this war. Both sides suffered heavy losses in aircraft and carriers damaged or sunk. The battle of the Coral Sea was the first battle in which neither side's ships fired directly on each other.
How did this battle come about? This battle begun because the Japanese invaded Tulagi, this took place May 3-4, the day before the Battle of the Coral Sea begun.
After the battle . . . The Battle of Midway was next and neither the ship Shokaku and Zulkaku were able to participate in this battle. This battle was considered a dual victory, although Japanese won in terms of ships being destroyed. The outcome of this battle prevented the Japanese from attempting to invade Tulagi again.
During the battle Beginning on 7 May, the carrier forces from the two sides exchanged airstrikes over two consecutive days. The first day, the U.S. sank the Japanese light carrier Shoho, while the Japanese sank a U.S. destroyer and heavily damaged a fleet oiler. The next day, the Japanese fleet carrier Shokaku was heavily damaged, the U.S. fleet carrier Lexington was critically damaged, and the Yorktown was damaged. With both sides having suffered heavy losses in aircraft and carriers damaged or sunk, both sides retired from the battle area.
