The lines serve as a guide for the path that a viewer’s eyes should take and as a result, the viewer first see the ideal form, the goddess, next he or she sees that which could represent them, the imp-like creature, a possible motif for humanity, or at least, the unenlightened, and then next, the driving force behind the goddess is wanted, so the eye is directed upwards to find the figure which appears to be more powerful than the yakshi. The yakshi’s simple ornaments could be due to a transitioning of the message of yakshi’s from an ideal to a more mundane and human obtainable form, which as a result, provides a sense of security and safety for those who are circumambulating the stupa in which the railing is around. The yakshi nevertheless is depicted as being divine but is much more relatable than other images of her. Another example of such a transition is in the form of the fertility tree motif being missing from the object, which is curious because the yakshi were previously synonymous with such a tree and such a change could be for what was mentioned above, that being that the Indian artisans, or rather the religion in general, are trying to appeal to more people, trying to make the yakshi appeal to a more mundane role. However, this does not fully remove the divine aspect of the figure as the lines of the object create a very clear distinction from…

After driven by a storm through rough seas, we discover the land of the Lotus Eaters, people who devour the lotus: fruit and flower. We dispatched onto the coast of the land and mingled with the natives. No direct threat to our men, our warriors, purely the lotus to eat. The Lotus Eaters told us of the delicacy, how fortunate we would be if we took a bite of just a little bit. Only one man did not eat the saccharine flower. We immediately forgot about our wants to return, our only thoughts being to consume the Lotus.…

Firstly the figure is seated with its legs crossed and arms settled atop his knees, in a later view it is noticed that the figure seems to have been carrying and object in its hands. The head is looking upward with an open mouth and completely open eyes. These features on the face suggest that it might be a mask and the posture of the figure depicts a position of chanting or in a state of trance. From the front view we are able to see that there is headdress and ear spools, both of which depict high social class. The figure is also wearing a pendant with teeth that covers the chest as well as teeth that cover the ankles. Several flowers are shown from the front view mainly located on the shins as well as the knees. The three classifications of flowers shown from the front view are as follows: knees-xochanacatl or "flower mushrooms," right shin-sinicuichi or “yellow flower,” and the left shin- Ololiúqui or “morning glory.” The morning glory in particular consisted of a vine with white bell shaped flowers and this particular flower can be seen on several other parts of the figure. All flowers contain psychoactive substances and each affects the mind…

The most intriguing part about it is his four arms. Its figure is often seen between human and godly, therefore his four arms could indicate his powerful and pervasive nature, that he is concerned in protecting all directions of life. The placement of all arms also provide an insight that his presence remained both in the spiritual world and the physical existence of reality. Specifically in the Web Article, Eisler states the objects in each hand, and hose objects are: “A lotus that represents purity and beauty, a conch shell that stands for the sacred OM sound, mace for strength and the destruction of evil, and a chakra that symbolizes the mind, intelligence, and the end of self-delusion.” The lotus flower signifies not only beauty but compassion, the grace of a flower must be delicate, the conch shell creates an OM sound that call out to spiritual seekers, the mace to protect the good, and the chakra to remain balanced in our energy in all parts of our body. The cherry blossom holds much symbolism within Japan. According to the Buddhist tradition, the breathtaking but brief beauty of the blossoms symbolizes the transient nature of life. The flowers last for at most a few weeks, but during that time, both the mountains and the cities are full of the delicate pink flowers, be the trees wild or cultivated. “The traditional Japanese values of purity and simplicity are thought to be reflected in the form and color of the blossoms.” (Osamu, 1983) The cherry blossom is also tied with the samurai culture, representing the fleeting nature of the samurai’s life and symbolic of drops of blood. (Frederic, 2002)…

It is estimated that members of the Orchidaceae family make up one tenth to one sixteenth of all species of flowering plants (Dressler). In 1973 it was predicted that 17,000 species existed (Willis) but that number has increased and it could now easily be between 20,000 and 25,000. This makes the Orchidaceae the largest family of flowering plants. However, this is not the only reason why they’re special. Orchids produce many small and light seeds that are easily dispersed by wind. While most seeds only travel meters away from its parent plant, some seeds can travel vast distances (e.g. cross the Atlantic Ocean from Africa to South America). It is perhaps…

The roots of lotus are planted in the soil of the pond or river bottom, while the leaves float on top of the water surface or are held well above it. The flowers are usually found on thick stems rising several centimeters above the leaves. The plant normally grows up to a height of about 150 cm and a horizontal spread of up to 3 meters, but some unverified reports place the height as high as over 5 meters. The leaves may be as large as 60 cm in diameter, while the showy flowers can be up to 20 cm in diameter.…
