Lost in a Forest
Katrina Pham
Ms. Leang English 1 HP, Period 1
3 October 2012
Lost in a Forest “It’s too dark, Katrina. I can’t see!” cried Christopher, my baby cousin. “Slow down! If I lose you, the monsters are going to swallow me whole.” I heard him, but his whimpers only exacerbated the situation, which was already worsening by the second. The sun had nearly disappeared behind the mountain, and the darkness was quickly claiming the night. Out of instinct, I grabbed his hand and we ran as quickly as we could wherever there was a path. Not even in my wildest dream could I have imagined how easily our pleasant afternoon stroll could turn into the chilling experience of my life, the night Christopher and I got lost in the forest by ourselves.
With each of us and our crazy schedules, summer was the best time for my entire family to unwind and enjoy a delightful vacation together. It was quite the struggle trying to agree on the perfect destination. “I think we should go to Africa and see that fat giraffe I saw on Tumblr,” I suggested as my family listened to my silly reasoning.
“Be quiet, weirdo. Deciding because of tumblr is just foolish. Let me and Percian decide, so we’d at least have a better reason,” Leon, my 16-year-old brother, retorted back almost instantaneously.
“If you like animals so much, what about going to the Brazilian Amazon? There’s nice scenery and pretty animals, I think,” My 17-year-old brother, Percian, said excitingly.
“Oh really? Like that’s a better reason!” I giggled, pointing at Leon.
“Let’s hope no one gets lost in that forest,” Percian chuckled and glared at me. Surely, he should have knocked on wood after that, but no one could have seen what was in store for us. Nevertheless, it was settled; my parents decided to go with Percian’s idea, and to bring Chris along while his parents were on a business travel. We stayed at the Tropical Manaus, a hotel that was just 50 yards from the forest. Tropical Manaus had a beautiful pool centered between two

A slight breeze blew throughout the dandy forest, swaying the stiff lifeless trees and blowing the black stained leaves across my bare white feet. As I stumbled across the dead landscape, a slight fog swam around blending in with the increasingly falling snow. Hundreds of dark wood surrounding me seemed to slowly cave in, creating a narrow cave-like passage. An eerie feeling swept over me, and I stopped completely, analysing every detail around me. The smog became thicker, blinding the scenery and almost completely covering my vision. I sensed an inhuman presence watching me, and flinched whenever a snapping sound came from a faraway distance. I slowly turned around and began pacing in the direction I came from. The fog smothered me but I kept running,…

Choosing a vacation can sometimes be difficult or even overwhelming. Especially when your family can be indecisive at times, it can be so much harder. Although when we saw Hocking Hills in a brochure we knew that’s where we wanted to go. Originally, we wanted to go to North Carolina, but my parents couldn’t find any hotels. Hockings Hills had breathtaking cabins and there were lots available at low cost. So Hocking Hills is what we chose instead. Off we went, on a 2 hour and 30 min car ride to Hocking Hills. When we got there it was so beautiful I couldn’t stop running around like a chicken with it’s head cut off. I couldn’t wait to get started doing things. There was even a hot tub!…

One night in August of 2014, my mom, Mika and I grabbed a flashlight and walked out the door into the dark night. My mom flipped on the flashlight and shone it on the bumpy path before us so we didn’t accidentally step into a ditch or trip on anything in the way. Normally nobody ever did much in the village after dark, but tonight was special.…

Every book has a certain message it wants to bring to you; whether it’s about greediness, loss, etc. This book, A Walk in the Woods, is about preparation, perseverance, and helping the environment. It’s mostly about the conservation and raising global awareness. It’s about two men who decided to hike the Appalachian Trail and while on it, discovered a lot of things, like the fact that they were both seriously out of shape.…

Keighli didn’t like the park; especially at night. In the day she’d see weird shapes in her peripheral vision, but when she turned to focus on the shapes completely, they wouldn’t be there. At night, the shapes seemed to lurk closer; she avoided going to the park all together after the first week of moving to the small town of Mehama, Oregon. Keighli was six and she didn’t see the point in moving, but she had no say in the matter.…

    The Thing in the Forest

When I first read The Thing in the Forest, I was immediately taken in. I wondered what the thing could be. Was she going to talk about the two little girls, Penny and Primrose, witnessing the making of weapons, the abused lives of other orphans, or even the murders of German prisoners? The exposition, especially the time when World War II was going on, had led me to expect hostility. And my expectations turned out to be right, but in a different form. “The thing” was a hideous, worm-like creature, described in detail in words but still difficult to picture. I think this was done by the author on purpose – to motivate us to use our imagination. Every person could have his or her own idea of what “the thing” looked like, but one issue was certain – it was a very unattractive thing, and would continue to haunt the two girls and the readers as the story went on.…

As I stepped out onto the balcony of my grandfathers tall, rustic cabin, the smell of wet dirt hit my nose. As I gazed down the mountain and across the valley, I could see dark and ominous clouds were quickly rolling towards us, heavy with rain. The straight line winds produced gusts that were as powerful as a tornado. It was about 8 oclock on that Montana summer evening, and even though night did not officially come until 11, night would arrive early as the clouds overshadowed and blotched out the last of the suns bright orange glow. A powerful lightning storm was approaching and it would show an impressive display of its might that I would not soon forget.…

    Into The Woods

Before Grimm, before Supernatural, and even before Wicked, there was one “reimagining of classic fairy tales with interwoven plots and grey scale characters” and that was Into the Woods by Stephen Sondheim. Sondheim uses four familiar stories to set the scene for his overarching plot allowing him to concentrate on jokes and creating new relationships between old characters. He also uses familiar characters in ways that blend categories. Through much of act one every character is stock through and through, yet by the end of the play our dashing prince charming has become an unapologetic adulterer, and the wicked old witch becomes an anti-hero. In addition to plot and character Sondheim pays special attention to his musical numbers; just from the first number we understand the characters relationships to one another, their motivations (having children, going to the festival, visiting grandma, and not starving), and we’re introduced to the play’s key metaphor: the woods. While these aspects were vital to the performances success I will be concentrating on the diction and acting.…

    The Road Essay

When he woke in the woods in the dark and the cold of the night he'd reach out to touch the child sleeping beside him. Nights dark beyond darkness and the days more gray each one than what had gone before. Like the onset of some cold glaucoma dimming away the world. His hand rose and fell softly with each precious breath. He pushed away the plastic tarpaulin and raised himself in the stinking robes and blankets and looked toward the east for any light but there was none. In the dream from which he'd wakened he had wandered in a cave where the child led him by the hand. Their light playing over the wet flowstone walls. Like pilgrims in a fable swallowed up and lost among the inward parts of some granitic beast. Deep stone flues where the water dripped and sang. Tolling in the silence the minutes of the earth and the hours and the days of it and the years without cease. Until they stood in a great stone room where lay a black and ancient lake. And on the far shore a creature that raised its dripping mouth from the rimstone pool and stared into the light with eyes dead white and sightless as the eggs of spiders. It swung its head low over the water as if to take the scent of what it could not see. Crouching there pale and naked and translucent, its alabaster bones cast up in shadow on the rocks behind it. Its bowels, its beating heart. The brain that pulsed in a dull glass bell. It swung its head from side to side and then gave out a low moan and turned and lurched away and loped soundlessly into the dark. With the first gray light he rose and left the boy sleeping and walked out to the road and squatted and studied the country to the south. Barren, silent, godless. He thought the month was October but he wasn't sure. He hadnt kept a calendar for years. They were moving south. There'd be no surviving another winter here. When it was light enough to use the binoculars he glassed the valley…

I still remember the time I saw the Unspeakable Word, and I cried out of happiness when I grasped the meaning of it. I took the name Prometheus and I took the name Gaea for my beloved. Since then, we have established a self-sufficient home and we have been living according to our desires. Gaea gave birth to two wonderful kids: Leon, our eldest, and Leona, our youngest.…

In the night’s high tides I look out for boats that are out in the ocean with my oversized flashlight up on the highest point in the lighthouse. “Is anyone out there!?” I yell. I end up finding no response. All that I can hear is the waves crashing onto the rocks. But then for an inexplicable reason, everything feels slower, colder… It’s snowing! I think to myself. I run down the stairs of the lighthouse and What do I see? I see the snow piled on the grass like solid clouds clumped on the green world. I hear the moose, just waking up, and already running around. I drive back home and I see frost stuck on people's houses like sugar stuck on a wooden ladle. Cold, I resumed my trip home. I seem to run into a moose,…

The main road was quiet and empty, as expected. We proceeded west of the village and found ourselves in Lineboro, nearly 10 kilometers away. This was all a part of my father's complicated plan, by proceeding as far out as possible, it would look less suspicious, especially with the dark night sky and the low sound of our vehicle. Continuing to drive through the silence of the night, edging closer to the empty countryside with every mile we traveled, we finally took a sharp turn onto an unpaved path that traveled directly through the empty forest. After some time, we came to a short stop, what was before my eyes was ever so reassuring. It was the widespread, open area of a dark and shining river.…

Further in the woods I come across the cabin we used to stay in when I was a child. Now it looks like something you would see in a scary movie. Since the death of my grandfather no one comes here anymore and the cabin has given way to the force of nature. One time this was such a beautiful place. As I head back down the dirt trail it begins to sprinkle rain. The rain smells like fresh laundry that was put on a line to dry.…
