Lord of the Flies : Relationship Between Two Main Protagonists
American president Franklin D. Roosevelt once said that “If civilization is to survive, we must cultivate the science of human relationships - the ability of all peoples, of all kinds, to live together, in the same world at peace. “ This quotation fits very well in the novel Lord of the Flies written by William Golding in 1954. This story is about a group of young boys from British school, who found themselves on a tropical island after an airplane crash. This story shows how people can easily change when there are no laws or restrictions to prevent them from becoming wild and out of control and that the pure person’s character will come up in situation similar to this one.
We can find many different characters amongst all the boys, but I will try to focus on characteristics of two main protagonists and analyze the relationship between them and also their attitude to other boys. I would like to bring you a brief summary of Lord of the Flies so my description of each protagonist is more understandable.
In the middle of ragging war, a plane evacuating a group of schoolboys from Britain is shot down over a deserted tropical island. There is no one but young boys on the island, no adults, no authority and all of a sudden everything is upon them. There are older boys but majority of little ones or “littluns” as they start to call them. Boys will realize that they need some supervision, someone who will be in charge of them and who will be giving orders so they do not become savages. They agree to make elections and boy named Ralph is elected as a chief. He chooses another older boy named Jack to be his assistant because he is already leading his choir. Now it is obvious that there are two most important characters in the story – Ralph and Jack. We also get to meet one of older boys called Piggy, who has immediately became a target of ridicule because of his appearance. Piggy is fat and wears glasses, which makes him not acceptable for kids´ games. However Ralph is

The saying “Survival for the fittest” is often seen in the wild, where stronger animals hunt down the weaker ones. A civilized society educates people not to scornfully despise or put down others. The group of boys on the island consists of both older and younger kids. The interactions between them show how human nature can retain its purity and goodness, as well as reveal its selfish and merciless side, exemplifying the conflict between civilization and savagery. Jack, Ralph and Piggy were three of the older boys. Jack, compelling and authoritative, often ignores the littluns and doesn’t really care about their safety and needs. When the older boys are out hunting for the beast, Ralph is concerned about who would take care of the little ones. Jack cries ‘Sucks…

“Lord of the Flies” is a thought-provoking novel, written by Nobel Prize winning author William Golding; about a group of British schoolboys who get stuck on an isolated island, and try to fend for and manage themselves; with catastrophic results. As the tale progresses, it becomes very clear that courage, loyalty and the human spirit are much more significant than human brutality as themes in the novel. In the face of human brutality, many characters show courage; acting appropriately and for the good of the group. Loyalty is a very important theme in the novel, simply because, without it, the majority of the characters would not have survived or worked together in the face of brutality and treachery. The theme of the human spirit is portrayed countless times, as the boys fight to overcome human brutality and be rescued.…

Throughout history, the “good guy” is often abused by surrounding beings. This often occurs in everyday life and has been demonstrated in countless stories. This was also shown in the Bible with Jesus Christ. One example of this occurrence can be found in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies. Golding uses the character Simon as a Christ figure and symbol of an ethical being to represent how people naturally begin to turn on their morals over time, from accepting the weak to murdering them.…

Our class just recently read Lord of the Flies which is a book that looks at the thinking of mankind. It has an overall negative vibe and was published 1954, this wasn’t long after World War II ended so some of the themes that seem dark in this story are almost justified with all the previous occurrences before it was written. This book has many messages, not just one, but all of which concealed within the text and are usually unforeseen without closer investigation. Most of the messages in the book are concerning social contact and psychological matters, all main factors of human life. The book is set on a secluded island where a plane containing a number of young boys has crashed and left them stranded. One main character on this island, Ralph, is voted chief by his peers and leads very well in the beginning. This flow is interrupted by Jack, another older boy who is overcome by his primordial instincts and creates a friction between the boys. Nearing the end of the book the group splits into two groups representing the savages, on Jack’s side, and the last hope of civilization, Ralph and his close friends. The two topics I will investigate are to do with psychological issues of mankind.…

The worst of mankind can come in many different forms, from little pre-school children, to the deaths and dangers of war. As Thomas Hobbes’ theories state, the nature of mankind is a state of war; all against all. In the novels Lord of the Flies by William Golding and A Separate Peace by John Knowles, the authors both examine a story that takes place under limited adult supervision while in the backdrop of war. In this setting, the characters act out the worst of mankind. In Lord of the Flies, the main characters show the worst of mankind through jealousy, savagery, and fear. Contrary to Lord of the Flies, In the novel A Separate Peace by John Knowles, the worst of mankind is shown mostly through jealousy. Violence in the children’s everyday life made the children themselves grow up violent. As Locke said, a human mind is blank until society contaminates. If you grow up in a war zone, you are likely to be more violent and open to conflict than someone who grew up in peace. Having said this, the boys in Lord of The Flies have experienced, first hand how war works. However, the effect of war in a A Separate Peace is much more direct to the story than in Lord of the Flies.…

In William Golding's Lord of the Flies, the entire plot is revolving around many school boys, from the ages of four to twelve, stranded on a deserted island with no adults and no order. There is a lot of testosterone and fighting over authority. There is a lot of mortal combat and death in this novel. There is, however, bullying and harsh words are exchanged between the boys, as well. there is absolutely no romance in Lord of the Flies, either, it is strictly about young British boys in the 1950's trying to survive together on an island. Unfortunately, there is no "happy ending" to this novel, evil wins. There are way more "villains" than there are "heroes" and, unlike fairy tales evil beats good in the overall look of things. This book is serious and heavy and is an symbol for life itself.…

From the time that the boys land on the island, both a power struggle and the first signs of the boys' inherent evil, Piggy's mockery, occur. After blowing the conch and summoning all the boys to come for an assembly, an election is held. "I ought to be chief , said Jack with simple arrogance, because I'm chapter chorister and head boy"(Golding 22). After Ralph is elected Chief, Jack envies his position and constantly struggles for power with Ralph throughout the rest of the novel, convincing the rest of the boys to join his tribe rather than to stay with Ralph. Also, soon after the boys arrive at the island, Piggy, a physically weak and vulnerable character, is mocked and jeered at by the other boys. After trying to recount all of the liluns' names, Piggy is told to "Shut up, Fatty," by Jack Merridew. Ralph remarks by saying, "He's not Fatty. His real name's Piggy." All of the boys on the island, except for Piggy, laugh and make themselves more comfortable at Piggy's expense. "A storm of laughter arose and even the tiniest child joined in. For a moment the boys were a closed circuit of sympathy with Piggy outside."(Golding 21). The boys instinctively become more comfortable with one another after Piggy's mockery and create a bond, leaving Piggy on the outside.…
