Lord of the Flies Essay In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies there are two major character that show many interesting characteristics throughout the book. Piggy and Jack display many good and bad traits that help keep the plot of the book moving forward. Jack displays in a negative way and Piggy in a positive way. These character help make some of the major events that take place throughout this book. In the book Jack can be seen a power-hungry individual that is ruthless in many ways. Some might say that Jack can be compared to one of the cruelest people in our history such as Adolf Hitler and Genghis Khan. Right after the hunters brutally murder the pig Jack says to his hunters “We’ll raid them and take the fire….. We’ll put on paint and sneak up. Roger can snatch a branch while I say what I want” (Golding 136). The reader can see that Jack is becoming a tyrant because now he is ordering his hunters to steal from other people. Also the reader can tell he has become mad with power and the hunters are servants to Jack and Jack uses them to have what he wants by ordering them to go steal for him. Jack can be related to Adolf Hitler and Genghis Khan because they all used means of violence and deceit to obtain they wanted in their time. Another big event is when Jack loses his control of his anger and intentionally tries to kill another human being. The book says that “with full intention [Jack] hurried his spear at Ralph….. and the tribe, screaming now like the Chief, began to advance” (Golding 181). This is another comparison mainly between Jack and Genghis Khan because Genghis Khan was short-tempered and would kill or torture anyone that did not listen to his rules or who was against him. Jack also manipulates his hunter into thinking what is acceptable in life. He takes the first throw at Ralph and the hunters processes what they should do and they eventually decide that they should follow Jack and kill Ralph. Much
