Lord Of The Flies

Lord of the Flies has many meanings to it which are defined through the characters involved in the story. and through the items found in the island or carried by the characters. Many of these characters differ from each other a lot. The characters that are the most important would be Ralph, jack, piggy and simon. Ralph and Jack both have different qualities and beliefs that define each of them completely and at times make them both alike in many matters. these characters represent what Civilized and Savage is.Lord of the Flies is an illustration novel, and many of its characters signify important ideas or themes. Ralph represents order, leadership, and civilization. Piggy represents the scientific and intellectual aspects of civilization. Jack represents uncontrolled savagery and the desire for power. Simon represents natural human goodness.

Ralph’s position throughout the novel develops: At the beginning, he is the most powerful and influential one of the boys because he is more attractive than Piggy and, in contrast to Jack, has got the conch. However, his authority is soon jeopardized. Jack is not in favour of a democratic society and uses the increasing deterioration to strengthen his own power. Ralph’s loss of power is accelerated by the fact that he cannot take care of the boys as Jack, the hunter, can. Finally - after Piggy’s and Simon’s deaths, Ralph himself is chased. Thus, he falls from the top to the bottom of the social pyramid on the island.

At the beginning of the novel Jack is a boy with principles, the choir boys are not allowed to take off their clothes and they must walk in two parallel rows . But when the other boys nominate Ralph to be their chief, his character begins to change. First he seems to like Ralph because they both want law and order on the island. He is eager to make rules and punish those who break them, although he consistently breaks them himself when he needs to further his own interests. The more the rules differ from the island reality, the more cruel and ruthless a person Jack turns out to be

Piggy is an outsider because the others separate him from the group and nobody listens to him, although he often tries to tell important ideas. The other boys do not respect him Therefore they do not even want to know his real name but call him “Piggy,” which is a nickname Piggy does not like. Even Ralph, who is the only one you could call Piggy’s friend, does not really respect him. Especially when Ralph has an almost friendly relation to Jack, who is Piggy’s worst enemy, Ralph refuses Piggy’s suggestions as for group organization.

Simon seems to be an outsider who longs for solitude. The fact that he spends some time alone in the forest shows that he is a character who needs time on his own, and does not like to stay with many persons around him all day.
