“Chinese and Japanese Outlooks and Attitudes to the West”
The age of exploration is said to be the most important time in human history. Everyday something new was invented; the human race constantly making things even better than they already were. However; under all the greatness and achievements there are many horrible things we had to do to get to these great times. It was a period of fear, isolation, wars, religious dispute, and hatred. The newly discovered East (China, India, Japan etc.) ended up for the most part being a disappointment because of the fact that is was closed to trade the one thing The West wanted to do. On the other hand, The East were scared of The West great military power (leading to isolation), forcefulness to trade and different religious views. In my opinion these are them most important topics covered this year on China and Japan.
Fear can be a powerful thing to deal with and fear never comes from peace. Most people try to hide their fear deep down inside them, making them look stronger, and more powerful. However, only people can hide things inside them selves. You can’t hide the fact that one country, colony, or nation fears another. Therefore, they look for alternate ways to “get way” or to “escape”. In the 15-20th centuries China and Japan both tried a tactic that they though could keep “down” their fear and distrust of the west. The way they did this was though isolation. However, they didn’t go into totally isolation because of the fact that The West viewed China and Japan as “great trade”, there was new lands to be explored and people to be Christianized; therefore, they didn’t want to them to go into isolation. Further more, The West applied some of there military pressure to open ports, and because of the fact that The West had far better military weapons and far larger armies; China opened up three small trading post: Canton, Macao and Ningbo and later where
