LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTURE

When thinking about writing this paper, it is easy for me to think of professional and academic goals. I have a hard time with personal goals. With that being stated, I have decided to make a personal goal of running my first 5K in 2014. My academic goal will be to achieve a B or higher in all my classes, and my professional goal will be to become a QIDP upon completion of my degree.

When I was researching the SMART goals in the Ashford Library, I came upon an article that stated “Goals also need to be relevant or realistic. Honestly evaluate what is possible and realistic considering the constraints of your life and schedule.” Lee, K. (2010) I have tried to set goals before, but have set unrealistic time frames to complete them. This, I feel, will be a good reminder for me.

I, Donna Stone, will compete in my first 5K race in October of 2014. I have started doing a couch to 5K training program. It takes you from sitting on your couch, so to speak, to running a
5K in 8 weeks. I will continue to work with this program to train for the race in October. It is very attainable for me to do this race. I find that the training takes perseverance, and that is really the only obstacle that I can see for myself. I have quit things before when I don’t feel I am achieving what I need to as fast as I need to. I think the traits of Openness to Experience,
Conscientiousness, and Extroversion will be helpful in achieving this goal. The variety of running in different places, the discipline of training and completing a race, and the social aspect of doing a new thing are all desirable to me. I feel all these things will help me reach this goal.
To stay accountable for this, I will register as early

By tough I mean endurance. If you were training for a 5K, would your longest runs consist of 3 and 4 milers? Of course not, You would never be able to run an efficient 5K. The same logic applies to the mile. If you do only speed workouts and never run more than 2 or 3 miles, I guarantee you will fade at the back end of the race. You don't need to do anything ridiculous like a 20 miler, but you should build up to consistently running 5 - 10…

Waking up at six in the morning on a Sunday is not typical, especially so when it is to run ten miles. However, this is how I have been spending my Sunday mornings for the past three years. I am a member of Students Run Los Angeles (SRLA), an organization that provides students the opportunity to run the LA Marathon. It is thanks to SRLA that I have been able to complete two marathons and am currently in training to complete my third. SRLA has not only taught me the importance of setting goals in life, but the character skills required to achieve those goals.…

This beginner marathon training plan is meant for casual runners who enjoy racing and have some experience running shorter distances or may have even completed a marathon before. The schedule involves running 5-6 times per week and it peaks at 40 miles per week. If you have not yet achieved 25 miles per week running, work your way up gradually by increasing your weekly mileage by no more than the total number of runs you’ve completed during the week every 3 to 6 weeks. For example, if you run 5 times per week, you can increase your mileage by up to 5 miles every 3 to 6 weeks. If you don’t have time to do that, consider our couch to marathon training plan instead. No matter which plan you choose, you should be thoroughly examined by a qualified medical professional before jumping in.…

This achievement is important to me because I constantly want to improve my running time and that 5:00 has been like a wall that I can’t cross in the past year, so it would feel amazing to break that barrier and just improve my time. From this I would not only benefit from a faster running time but also the motivation to continue running and to feel like if I push myself, it’s worth it. I think that if I continue running 3 to 5 times a week like I am currently doing, I will be able to improve my running time to 5:00 minutes for 1 km. If I don’t reach that goal during the semester, I will probably be able to get there during the summer, so I think this can only increase my motivation to run.…
