Looking for Alibrandi by Melina Marchetta, and Willow Tree and Olive by Irini Savvides: Book Comparison
The two books Willow Tree and Olive (Irini Savvides) and Looking for Alibrandi (Melina Marchetta) are very similar and yet very different. There is a distinct connection between the storyline and the personality traits of the main characters of both novels. Yet there are contrasts between the methods by which the authors have employed in writing these novels.

Willow Tree and Olive is the story of Olive. Olive is of Greek descent and she struggles with conforming to the traditions of her culture. These problems with the combination of stress form the upcoming HSC exams causes Olive to have a nervous breakdown, which bring up suppressed memories of the past. This is the story of a girl who had the whole world planned when it all plummeted down. This is the story of hope in the face of adversity.

This novel begins slowly. Quite a bit of reading is required until the reader is able to fully grasp Olive's situation. The plot drags along as the author takes time to develop the character and at points overemphasizing Olive's problems. As we progress further, things start to happen. When we discover finally what Olive's true problems are and she goes through her emotionally problems everything happens quickly. The reader is suddenly bombarded with fragments of ides and issues. After the incident, the story returns to the slow monotonous pace and the reader discovers more after the character clearly and is then prepared for the predictable ending. The characterisation is definitely there, the way the text even reflects the way Olive feels. The book itself is made of fragments of Olive's journey, sometimes including normal 1st person text, lists so forth.

Looking for Alibrandi is the story of Josephine Alibrandi, who is of Italian descent. She too is coming terms with the rules and regulations that come with her cultural background. Wise Blood Vs Maus

In the comparison of two novels, Wise Blood by Flannery O’ Connor and Maus I & II by Art Spiegelman, it is first important to understand the objective differences between the two. The former is a fictional telling of Hazel Motes’ world – where he is at a constant struggle to understand his own faith along with the battle against an industrialized version of religion. The latter, on the other hand, is a true account of one man’s battle through the Holocaust in the form of a direct conversation with his son, the writer. It almost seems criminal to compare the two, but when delving in deeper it doesn’t seem too out of the ordinary to imagine the similarities that could be found not between the two main characters (with the assumption of Art Spiegelman,…

I enjoyed this book thoroughly and always kept me intrigued until the end. It had small twists in it that were rather easy to interpret but it was also very interesting. I don’t particularly relate to this book, although situations that I’ve endured have changed my perspective on life, in a positive aspect, and made me unprejudiced and versatile and not so…

This book was very different than anything I have ever read. I am still deciding whether I liked it or not. It was hard for me to follow because it kept jumping back in forth in time. The first three chapters I hap kept re-reading to focus and grasp what was going on. I was extremely confused and it went from the opening scene in 1931 to Milkman being four years old in one paragraph. I do feel this is a book you need to read over and over again to fully gain an understanding of the messages and symbols the author was displaying through each character. I thought the book was interesting that although it dealt with racial issues and focused on how characters such as Guitar and Milkman had different views of status and discrimination, their was very little mention of white characters in the book. The majority if not all the characters were black decent and it was purely one sided view on how the black race dealt with racial issues in a small town at that time. I think Pilate was a crazy character and I didn't like how long it dragged out to find the true nature of why her relationship was the way it was with her brother Macon Dead Jr. I feel like the author was changing the subject and jumping around so much that you never fully get to know any one character. I didn't like how the author killed Milkman in the end, it was as if you finally made some self discovery and then he jumps to his death. The book just builds and layers and builds, and when you finally feel like you might understand where it's leading three of the main characters die within the last pages. Aside from racial views and Milkmans self discovery from his life as his fathers son, to discovering his family history and where he wants to be in the future, I didn't really connect with any other character in the book, or understand their significance in his discovering…

When I was reading this book, I was confused about what was happening and this made me not enjoy it as much. One thing I did not like was how Cadence would write fairy tales about a king and three sisters. I didn't understand why she was writing these fairy tales and what they had to do with the plot. But, later learned that these stories represented her her mother and aunts difficult relationship with her grandfather. I did not like these stories because I didn’t think they were necessary in the book. However, I did like how the author made it seem like in the beginning that Cadence’s life was perfect because she gets anything she wants, but when you read more into the book you realize her life is anything but perfect. I liked this aspect of the book because it made it more interesting to read about Cadence’s story.…

The novel ‘Looking for Alibrandi’ is the story of a main character Josie who is completing her final years oh high school at an exclusive private school. The novel is written in first person narrative voice, which allows the reader to see Josie’s self doubt, her attitude towards her future and the growth she makes through out the novel ‘This might be where I come from but do I really belong here’. Josie also becomes more aware of her attitude towards the way she acts when she says ‘I’m beginning to realize that I can be a little selfish.’ Marchetta’s direct speech shows the reader that Josie’s perceptions are not always reliable; this is evident when Sister Louise says ‘ You have to learn that sometimes you have to keep your mouth shut’ which is something characters other than Sister Louise echo to Josie.
