Looking For Alaska Setting Analysis
Looking for Alaska
Everything important in Looking for Alaska takes place on campus at the Culver Creek boarding school in Alabama. The setting probably takes place in the 21st century.
During the entire novel, the setting moves around many times in very specific ways. The weather at the beginning of the novel is hot and humid, and the good weather creates an atmosphere of happiness, but only at the beginning. In chapter 15, a rain storm begins in Alabama and there is intense rain happening for about a week. During this time, Alaska becomes increasingly moody and Miles takes it personally. The smells that are associated to Alaska, the vanilla and cigarette smell, plays an important role in the setting of the story. Miles has a certain attachment to this smell, and to him, it is a familiar smell that brings back good feelings.

Divergent
The setting of the novel takes place in a ‘Futuristic, Dystopian Chicago’. There's a giant fence that locks everyone into the city; Lake Michigan has become a swamp; large parts of the city are crumbling or in ruins. It's now "a patchwork of new, clean buildings and old, crumbling ones" (3.35). We don’t really find out what happened to the city but it pretty sure wasn’t good.
A dystopian setting needs more than just some crumbling buildings. It needs some weird new government and society. Since Tris isn't one of the leaders, we don't see firsthand how the government works. But we do hear about it, so we know it's led by an Abnegation council with representatives from other factions coming in to speak, but not vote.
Society is organized so that each faction takes care of some particular part of the city. The Dauntless are the guards and security of the city, while Amity seems to be in charge of the farms.
But the big change between our time and Tris's time is the separation of the city into the five different

Knowles uses the summer session setting to symbolize peace. Knowles uses the positive setting described in this quote to reveal the importance of the setting: “They (elms) too seemed permanent and never changing, an untouched, unreachable world high in space, like the ornamental towers and spires of a great church, too high to be enjoyed, too high for anything, great and remote and never useful”. Knowles describes the setting like this to create a peaceful image representing the summer session as a time of peace. This also brings a vividly peaceful image to mind further connecting the concepts of summer and peace together which is later conquered by the war elements of winter.…

Chicago - a land of opportunity. Today one might chuckle at the thought, but during the nineteenth century it was very much the case. William Cronan’s Nature’s Metropolis was published in 1991 and still remains one of the greatest books ever written about the city of Chicago. Cronan uses the book to describe the rise of Chicago and how it played a role in the flourishing of economics in the country as a whole; thus, using Chicago as an example of the interconnectedness between city and country. Beyond that however, Cronan’s oxymoron title is descriptive to how Chicago, and our country as a whole, was built from nature.…

Weather is a key element in providing viewers not only the time of year the story is taking place, such as seasons, but it can also be used as a factor for additional drama. There are three different days showcasing three different church services, this provides evidence that the movie takes place within a few weeks rather than a few days. There is also never a hint of sunshine, it is either overcast, raining or snowing, suggesting that it is winter. The cold and darkness can play a large role in evoking certain emotions. In one particular scene, Sister Aloysius is in her office asking Father Flynn of his suspicious acts with Donald. It is raining heavily outside and when Sister Aloysius exclaims, “So you admit it!” a loud roaring of thunder takes place, adding tension between the characters. Shanley uses the weather to add suspense and anxiety to a heated argument, leaving clues to the viewer of the intense gravity of the situation.…
