Quotes
• "People like me don't get fat. I've tried to tell you before. We just burn everything up."
• "If you could have a child, and it would die...if only I could watch you face that.”
• "Oh heavens, how I long for a little ordinary human enthusiasm.
Just enthusiasm -- that's all. I want to hear a warm, thrilling voice cry out Hallelujah!...Hallelujah! I'm alive!"
• "If you've no world of your own, it's rather pleasant to regret the passing of someone else's. I must be getting sentimental. But I must say it's pretty dreary living in the American Age -- unless you're an
American of course."

• "It's what he would call a question of allegiances, and he expects you to be pretty literal about them. Not only about himself and all the things he believes in, his present and his future, but his past as well."
• "Jimmy went into battle with his axe swinging round his head
-- frail, and so full of fire. I had never seen anything like it. The old story of the knight in shining armour (sic) -- except that his armour didn't really shine very much."
• "One day, when I'm not longer spending my days running a sweet-stall, I may write a book about us all. ...It'll be recollected in fire, and blood. My blood."

• "Why, why, why, why do we let these women bleed us to death?" • "I suppose people of our generation aren't able to die for good causes any longer. We had all that done for us, in the thirties and the forties, when we were still kids. ...There aren't any good, brave causes left."

Pressures to stay fit and skinny are becoming increasingly overwhelming from media, society, and doctors as obesity climbs toward becoming an epidemic, claims Mary Ray Worley. Worley, a member of National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA), believes that today’s society is now obsessed with being fit/thin to the point of people “would rather die or cut off a limb than be fat” (163). In her article, “Fat and Happy: In Defense of Fat Acceptance,” she is on a mission to dispel the belief that society should stigmatize overweight people to coerce them into losing weight; she wants people of high weights to accept themselves and love their bodies the way they are and to forge “a new relationship with our bodies, one that doesn’t involve…

How does one become fat? Is it the lack of responsibility of one's actions to make healthy food choices, the lack of knowledge to know if something is healthy or unhealthy for your body, or television hypnotizing the viewer into buying an unhealthy product? According to surgeon general, obesity has become a health epidemic that needs to be controlled and prevented. Almost a third of America's population is obese and growing. Obesity is also now a wide spread topic that has caught the attention of journalists and health activists. Writers all over America have an opinion on the obesity epidemic such as Radley Balko who wrote the article "What You Eat Is Your Business."…

The quote explains that throughout the years obesity has become more pandemic even though the way our bodies are made today are the same as centuries ago. What has changed between those times and now is the environment in which we live. There are more varieties now than ever before and people have a hard time making healthy choices and decide to eat unhealthy foods. Therefore we cannot label obesity as a disease, but it can be labeled as a choice. There are many ways to prevent becoming obese. However with most real diseases there is no prevention, the diseases are not caused by anything the person has done wrong. While being obese typically comes from making the wrong lifestyle…

Instead of tearing overweight people down, they can encourage them to take action to help them live a happy and healthy life. Sometimes in life, people need to understand that it takes positive remarks and actions to help one another out while facing struggles. Society poses this stupid idea that you have to be a certain size to model, or be on TV and that’s unacceptable. It’s time to take action now and stop the mindset that fat people are unaccepted.…

Obesity is an upcoming and extremely prevalent phenomenon in America today. Author, Judith Moore of the book “Fat Girl” discusses some of the issues fat girls face. Her book is less about every stereo-typed fat girl and more about her story individually. Judith Moore chooses to take a different route, instead of complaining continuously about being fat, she explains in depth why she believes she is fat. She is not lazy; she expresses her knowledge of diets and her experiences of strenuous work outs but ends with little to no results. ''My flesh resists loss. My fat holds on for dear life, holds on under my bratwurst arms and between my clabber thighs.''…

We often assume things because of how something appears to be. With today’s social media , we ostracize skinny or thin as our image of health. In order to be healthy we have to be this size or weigh this much. When truth be told people who are the “ideal” weight and size can have the same medical issues as if they were fat or obese . “There are many thin people who lack good muscle tone; lack capacity for physical endurance; and are prone to poor eating habits-all putting them at risk for chronic disease.” (Sara Klajajic) Even a 2008 study found that, “about one-fourth of U.S. adults with normal weight have some form of unhealthy heart, like high blood pressures or cholesterol.” (Alexander Siefferin) In both articles, “The Hidden Dangers of ‘Skinny Fat’ ” and “Skinny…

There are millions of people that struggle daily from being overweight and they don’t understand what they are supposed to do about it. Being overweight isn’t something that people should be taking lightly and something should really be done about it. “About 35.7 percent of American adults and 16.9 percent of children between the ages of 2 and 19 are obese, according to the federal statistics.” Victoria, C. (2012, September 19). With knowing this information, everyone in this country is at risk if Americans don’t figure out how to get this situation under control. Some people don’t even find obesity to be a problem and think that it’s ok to live their lives overweight like this but little do they know their lives are at risk. Americans these days don’t realize that they are at risk of becoming diabetic if they don’t get their weight under control.…

Despite the increasing obesity dilemma, studies indicate that some doctors find it hard to address weight issues with obese patients. Although, the doctor and patient know there is a problem, neither is willing to discuss it. This only makes the problem more complex later on, when it could have been resolved in the early stages. William, Bestermann Jr., a medical director for Holston Medical Group in Kingsport, Tenn., states that “if doctors are committed to keeping patients from having strokes or heart attacks, then this conversation cannot be avoided, and they have to help their patients lose weight.” Bestermann has developed a plan for doctors to help guide and successfully treat obese patients on a committee for the Stop Obesity/Alliances, which consist of professional businesses, healthcare providers, unions and insurers whose sole purpose is to strategize an attack on obesity.…

    Controlling Anger

In the article that I read on controlling anger I never knew it could have such a huge impact on not only your life but also co-workers and family members. We all know that anger is never a good thing. Anger can lead to so many problems with anyone at anytime. The tips and techniques they describe in the article are very good and can be practiced to reduce your anger towards a situation or problem you may be facing at the current time. One of the techniques that I found most interesting was using humor to calm you down. Humor in our lives is always good since it can make us laugh at any moment. We all have a sense a humor and I have seen people go from extremely upset to bursting into tears from laughter. Anger can become suppressed and can be used as a positive action instead of the opposite. Also have a super tough situation on you hands that makes you go into an angry mood can be helped by talking to someone else about it and having another insight on things. The article also talks about that if you have a huge anger problem you might have to attend to a specialist who can teach you other ways to help relax and suppress that anger.…
