A Comparative Study of Long-term and Short-term Memory between Athletes and Non-Athletes

ABSTRACT
Physical exercise has demonstrated to considerably affect stimuli in the brain to increase an individual’s memory. Athletes will have better long-term and short-term memory compared to those who are not athletes. The intent of this study was to evaluate and compare the long-term and short-term memory of athlete and non-athlete. Twenty participants were tested, ten of which were athletes and ten non-athletes. All of the participants were seniors at Mount Pleasant High School, ranging from the age 17-19. Only short-term and long-term memory was tested in this experiment. Standard picture questionnaires

In their study, they used one hundred college boys, 50 that were athletically involved and 50 that were non-athletes whose age ranged from 22 to 25. Only long-term and short-term memory was measured, and two standard questionnaires were given to the subjects. The first questionnaire measured short-term memory, the other measured long-term memory. L.T.M. scale finds out the effect of rehearsal of paired- associates on the long-term memory of the subject when tested after two minutes of interpolated task. Higher percentage of recall indicates better performance and lower percentage indicates poor performance (Saha, Halder & Das, 2013). Short-term memory scale studies the effect of different time intervals and association values on short-term recall. Higher percentage of recall indicates better performance and lower percentage indicates poor performance (Saha, Halder & Das, 2013). Their results showed that athletes performed better in both tests.     Furthermore, Bahrick et al (1975) carried out an investigation into very long term memory. They took 392 graduates from a high school in America, who were shown pictures from their year book. These graduates had left school anything from 1 to 50 years ago. Bahrick tested two conditions: recognition condition and free recall condition. In the recognition condition, participants were asked to match a list of names to the picture and in the free recall condition the participants were asked to name the person in the picture. They found that the participants in the recognition condition performed better than people in the free recall condition and that, after 47 years, they were 60% accurate in the recognition condition but only 20% were accurate in free recall.     Research suggests that the duration of short term memory is limited to on average of up to 2 minutes. Duration is the amount of time a memory lasts before it is no longer accessible. The researchers Peterson & Peterson were testing how 24 university students could recall 3 random syllables after counting back from a generated number in multiples of 3. The finding of this research was the larger amount of time between seeing the syllables and recalls them lead to a decrease in the amount of people that could recall the original 3 syllables. The conclusion that was made from this was that as time increases a lower amount of people can recall as the time elapses. These are advantages because they are all key things to make a successful experiment and in order to be acknowledge for hard work strong analysis and good evidence has to be used in order to get noticed, there were however some disadvantages to their experiment as there are to all these were that because they have only use 24 participants it cannot be generalised and this also makes it a unfair test and is not representative, as well as only 24 students they were all in university which is a biased sample as well as a biased age because it also means it cannot be generalised except internally for their year.
