Loneliness In Stephen Marche's Is Facebook Making Us Lonely
In Stephen Marche’s “Is Facebook Making Us Lonely?”, published in The Atlantic in May 2012, he brings up the topic of the growing loneliness in America and its possible connection with Facebook. Marche shows us the “accelerating contradiction” (62), where the system that was designed to connect us, is actually causing us to become more lonely. Isolation, or solitude, does not mean that someone is unhappy. Loneliness, on the other hand, is what makes us miserable. However, both are on the rise. In one survey, it showed that there is a decrease in confidents in America, which lead to the growth in the professional field where we hire replacements to help with and hear our problems. And we need these professional careers more and more with the threat of a “societal breakdown” (64) has become an issue of public health. Loneliness can also have serious effects on ones health. Moira Burke, a recent graduate of Human-Computer Institute at Carnegie Mellon, has stated that personalized messaged, or “composed communication”, is more satisfying than “one-click communication” (66), just a like or such on a post. Also, people who receive composed communication have found to be less lonely. The only thing better is a private Facebook message in a semi-public conversation where one pays little mind to the people possibly viewing it as well.
