On April 4th, 1928 an extraordinary woman was born in St. Louis Missouri to the late Bailey Johnson and Vivian Baxter Johnson when they seen her gorgeous face she was given a beautiful name Marguerite Ann Johnson. At the time of her birth no one knew how great she would be in our history of poetry, novels, movies, and plays. Sometime in her life she changed her name to Maya Angelou. Maya came from her brother he used to call her my-a-sister; it was his nickname he gave to her. During her years Maya has had rough times especially in her first seventeen years of life. She has been highly honored for her many bodies of work including being awarded with over thirty honorary degrees and nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for her 1971 volume of poetry, “Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water “Fore I Diiie.” (Wikipedia.org) Maya has been through trials and tribulations in her life that she has managed to get through with her head held high and a determined persona of herself. Maya is considered a legend in her own time and a powerful role model for several of our inspiring poets including Nikki Giovanni and Gwendolyn Brooks just to name a few. Maya Angelou has written six autobiographies which have all focused on her growing up and her early childhood years. In Maya’s first published book “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” Maya speaks about her family, parents divorce, her and her brother Bailey living with relatives, and the abuse and rape she endured from her mother’s boyfriend. Maya Angelou has overcome racism, rape, and being a mute and when you look at this spectacular woman and all of her accomplishments she deserve a standing ovation. Maya the Person…

I am by no means a poetry fanatic. I disliked learning about their structure in middle school into high school. I loathed having to put together haikus and soliloquies for my English class freshman year. That being said I entered the basement of St. Ignacious with a rather jaded attitude and a goal for my new high score for the next level of Angry Birds. I slumped down in my chair next to my friends who also, I’m sure, shared a similar approach to this Thursday night where the plans for later that evening were of more importance. However, what Peter Rogen and Amir Vahab performed for the next hour kept my phone in my pocket and my attention fixed on Peter’s soft spoken tone and Amir’s calming melodies. While I noticed some of my classmates exiting early and dozing off, I saw others fixated just as I was.…

What types of things come to mind when you think about success? When I think of someone being a success I think of someone who achieved some type of goal or obtained an honor of some type. The three poems I found talk about what success means to each of the individual writers of these three poems. Each writer has their own personal opinion on what success means to them. These poems are all about success, but you will notice how they are all very different from one another.…

She began to publish her work with in the early 1900’s century. The theme of the poem is most often of love, betrayal, sadness and loss. The cause of mistreated children and as her travel to Europe, she noticed that the children are been mistreated not taking care of and feeling neglect. This poem is a poor orphan girl who had nothing in life. But try to give to kids that needed that most with no clothes on their back, no shoes on their feet. This poem has brought me sadness, made me feel horrible and ashamed. Sadness because it’s true, child prostitution is a real social issue and a great concern at that. Horrible, because I just couldn’t imagine the plight of a child described in the poem. I was so ashamed that I got shallow understanding about this beautiful piece of art. I felt I wasn’t giving it the respect it deserves.…
