Locke vs. Knowledge Innatism

In this paper, I will explore the topic of knowledge innatism and define what it is and what it isn’t, Locke’s objections to it, and responses to these objections. After raising an objection, I will argue either that 1) this objection is weak or 2) this objection works.
The sort of knowledge that nativists think are innate in the mind are truths that do not have to be learned through experience, such as knowledge of the laws of nature & mathematical truths. Examples of these are: 1) “What goes up must come down” (the law of gravity) & 2) “one plus one is two”. This school of thought is used to explain certain truths that might seem to have universal applicability. Nativists think that certain sorts of knowledge are innate because of 1) its universal applicability or 2) truths that go beyond sensory experience, such as: 1a) moral/ ethical truths such as the concepts of “right” & “wrong” & 2b) the idea of people having a “soul”.
For Locke, his biggest problem with the nativist school of thought is that their ultimate assertion is unclear; he is unsure if nativists are saying A) that everyone is born with knowledge of certain truths and is conscious of them all along, OR if they are saying that B) everyone is born with the innate capacity to come to know certain truths. As Locke understands it; if A), then it is empirically false, because infants and retards have no concept of these truths. For example, if you were to ask an infant, “What is the square root of 4761?” they would not know. For Locke, this negates any notion that there are universal truths accepted by all human beings. He argues that, “No proposition can be said to be in the mind, which it never yet knew which it was never yet conscious of” ( p.23). What he is saying is that it is not plausible to conclude that certain innate truths exist if someone is not consciously aware of them.     When Thomas Jefferson was drafting the American Declaration of Independence, he looked to a number of philosophers and studied their writings. This helped him put into words the best possible foundation for the United States of America. One of the main influencers of Jefferson’s writing was a person he called one of the “three greatest men that have ever lived, without any exception”, (Jefferson, Thomas) the English philosopher John Locke. You can see Locke’s influence in the American Declaration, when Jefferson penned “that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” (The Declaration of Independence) These words in the declaration have the same tone as Locke’s words in the Second Treatise of Government when he stated “a legitimate government may not violate our natural right to life, liberty, and property.” (John Locke) It is widely reported and quoted throughout the internet, (but I have been unable to find the original source) that in one of Jefferson’s original drafts of the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson used Locke’s original words of: life, liberty and property. Later in his final official draft that he presented to the committee (who were: John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert R. Livingston), Jefferson changed Locke’s “Property” to “the pursuit of Happiness.”…

    Nativists believe that certain behaviours are innate, that is we are born with them and they cannot be changed. They mainly involve reflexes and instinct e.g. when a bird hatches from its egg it does so instinctively or when a puppy drinks milk from its mother they are not taught to do this. Another example is when a person makes a loud noise in front of a new-born infant they are likely to startle them this is considered a reflex and it comes naturally without any control. Other reflexes include coughing and swallowing and without these a baby would not survive for e.g. a baby would not be able to live if they could not swallow food or if food got stuck in there windpipe they would choke if they were not able to cough it up. Cohen’s research in (1967) found that when babies were hungry and crying for a feed they became quicker at recognising their mother’s nipple, therefore, some believe that this behaviour can be learned.     Locke believed that knowledge was only gained through worldliness. He told people that experiences caused them to learn. One famous this he argued is that, “at birth the mind is a tabula rasa”3. Tabula rasa translates to “clean slate”. Essentially, everyone is born without knowledge and over time they become wiser and smarter. This was revolutionary because previously no one had every stopped to think about how knowledge was gained other than schooling. Locke was the first to think that people were born without any knowledge. He emphasized the five senses as well. Humans fill their clean slate with ideas and experience in the world through their five senses. There are many varying definitions of knowledge, but John Locke is the most accurate. Locke defines knowledge as “the connection and agreement, or disagreement and repugnancy, of the ideas humans form”4. Since our knowledge is derived from our experiences, it means our knowledge is limited. Not everyone can know everything since not one single person can experience everything this earth has to offer in one lifetime. This also means that everyone’s knowledge varies and no two people have the same exact knowledge since everyone’s experiences are different. Locke also notes that there is a great deal of unknown on this world and there always will be. This observation still is true today because there is a great deal of uncertainty in today’s society. He is also still influential because he taught us to question those uncertain areas. As a continuation, he agrees that there are certain things that we are certain of. One example that Locke uses is the certainty of our own existence and the existence of God even tough we may not fully comprehend who or what he was5.     John Locke is most notable from his views and discoveries on natural law. Although he is most remembered for his findings on natural law, it was established way before him.     John Locke, an Englishman who lived from 1632 to 1704, promoted some of the most influential ideas of the Enlightenment. He pioneered the idea that humans are naturally good, and are corrupted by society or government to becoming deviant. Locke described this idea in hisAn Essay Concerning Human Understanding as the tabula rasa, a Latin phrase meaning blank slate. The idea was not original to him, however. In fact, Locke directly took the idea from a Muslim philosopher from the 1100s, Ibn Tufail. In Ibn Tufails book,Hayy ibn Yaqdhan, he describes an identical idea about how humans act as a blank slate, absorbing experiences and information from their surroundings. The same idea manifests itself in the life of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). He stated that No child is born except on the fitra.     Locke believed that people are born a free human being. His main idea is his writing was that if a government should fail the people of the country have the right to become or create a new government. The same rules apply if the citizens decide the government is using their power in the wrong ways. As well as the other philosophers and more to come as I write, John Locke wrote many books and was a very influential enlightenment thinker. In one of his books, Second Treatise on Civil Government, written in 1690, he was talking about the dissolution of government. He says,”When the government is dissolved, the people are at liberty to provide themselves, by erecting a new legislative,... they have not only a right to to get out of a failed government, but to prevent it.”(Locke) Okay, that literally is almost a restatement of what I said about his beliefs earlier.
