Chapter 15

ABSTRACT
The ability to gather and manipulate real world contextual data, such as user location, in modern software systems presents opportunities for new and exciting application areas. A key focus among those working in the area of Location-Based services today has been the creation of social networks which allow mobile device users to exchange details of their personal location as a key point of interaction. While the initial interest in these services has been exceptionally high, they are plagued by the same challenges as all Location Based services, regarding the privacy and security of users and their data. This chapter aims to investigate the area of Location-Based Social Networks (LBSNs), with a view to documenting how they contribute to a new form of expertise due to the now accurate knowledge of where people are actually located at a moment in time.

INTRODUCTION
Location-Based Social Networks (LBSN) leverage the power and high adoption rate of modern mobile devices to provide applications and services which allow users to share and discuss the real-world places they visit, as a part of their virtual interactions (Curran et al, 2011). The ever-increasing uptake in the use of the internet and online social networks, supported by the capabilities of today’s ‘smart’ mobile devices, has brought with it a host of new possibilities for user interaction. Of these, ‘location sharing’ among users has undoubtedly become the feature ‘du jour’ when it comes to

building social networking services. The focus placed on location sharing varies from service to service, with some such as Twitter and Facebook providing such features as non-essential extras and others, such as Foursquare, Gowalla, Brightkite and Google Latitude making the concept of social location sharing central to the user

    In regards to the issue of how effective and efficient mobile-based applications are at capturing customer data and tools that utilize geolocation technology, we will begin with the current state of smartphone app usage and specific processes made in correlation with mobile devices.     Geolocation integration can be accomplished at many different points in an application requests lifecycle. To realize the greatest value across the broadest Spectrum of use cases, gathering of geolocation data is most efficiently accomplished when a request is first made for a given resource. The Application Delivery Controller is typically deployed at a strategic point in the application and network architecture: at the perimeter of the network, acting as an intermediary between clients and resources. Given this strategic location, geolocation data should be incorporated into the existing context that is already associated with every request such as IP address, user-agent, and ability to accept specific types of content. Accurate geolocation data is generally provided by an external, third-party service like Quova. These services can be billed in a variety of ways, including by the number of queries and bandwidth transferred. To minimize the capital and operational costs associated with retrieving geolocation data while maintaining the ability to share that data with the broadest number of devices and applications, centralization of the retrieval process is necessary. Centralized control has the added benefit of decreasing an organizational risk by permitting or denying access at the perimeter of the network when location is part of the authorization process. By integrating geolocation services with a unified application delivery service, it is also possible to share the data retrieved from the third-party service with all functions deployed on the Unified Application and Data Delivery platform. Vital signs include the heart beat, breathing rate, temperature, and blood pressure. These signs may be watched, measured, and monitored to check an individual's level of physical functioning. Typically, a nurses and clinicians would oversee and be responsible for the taking and recording of the vitals manually documenting them with a mobile computer or the results were written on paper and the clinician left the patients room to manually document into the electronic chart using computers. At times, this documentation happened hours later when time permitted. The vitals were hard to take in some cases and errors were not uncommon.
