Section B. Is local diversity a product of regional forces, local forces, or both, and how might we know?

In ecology, the change in species diversity across space and time is one of the oldest studied subjects, however the underlying causes of many diversity patterns is under much debate (Field et al. 2001; MacArthur, 1972; Rosenzweig, 1995). How does diversity arise (Erwin 1991)? How is diversity distributed in space (Dean et al. 1997, Fonseca et al. 2000)? And how is diversity maintained (Lande, 1988)? Are three fundamental questions that ecologist look to answer. Early studies focused around the role of competition in determining diversity at local scales, today however it is emphasized that many factors on top of competition, such as dispersal, predation, variation in the physical environment, and historical factors, influence diversity patterns across a range of scales (Rosenzweig, 1995).
According to MacArthur (1965) local dynamics happened quickly compared to regional dynamics and so due to the filling of ‘niche space’, communities would be ecologically saturated with species. This led to the conclusion that historical/biogeographic process like speciation and extinction rates could be dis-included when explaining local diversity. This resulted in local ecological processes being a default belief for terrestrial community ecologists. In contrast to this ‘Niche theory’, where diversity is limited to local factors, MacArthur & Wilsons (1967) equilibrium theory of Island Biogeography considers that local diversity is thought of as a chance of events of immigration and extinction, determined by regional processes. The conflict between the two theories simultaneously explaining community structure at different scales was referred to as ‘MacArthurs Paradox’ (Schnoener, 1983) and is still debated today.

    Species richness (the total number of different species in the community) and relative abundance of the different species (the proportion each species represents of the total individuals in the community) are two components that go along with explaining the species diversity of a community. When there is an increase in species diversity, this is a great thing because with more species that are different from each other, the community can grow larger and thrive without any endangered species. Species with the same ecological niche could be a potentially dangerous thing because if two species are competing to eat the same plant or animal, they could eventually cancel each other out for good (extinction). For example, if two species of fishing birds only eat/catch trout and the trout population is decreasing, the two bird species will compete against each other and eventually one species will die off because there will not be enough food for both species. If there is a change in population density in the primary producers (for example), the whole community is affected because if there are fewer producers to eat, then there are less primary consumers to eat, and so on.     Though not considered a major biome, coral reefs qualify by definition. Coral reefs are marine ecosystems located within clear, shallow water. These reefs require water between 25 and 31 degrees Celsius, and do well in water with a salinity of 34 and 37 parts per 1000. These conditions are most often found within 30 degrees latitude of the equator, or in other words, the tropics. As the name suggests, corral reefs are formed by colonies of coral polyps. Coral polyps secrete calcium carbonate (limestone) which forms the reefs. The polyps receive oxygen and nutrition through photosynthesis preformed by zooxanthellae algae. The necessity of large amounts of sunlights further restricts the environments in which these reefs can flourish. Reefs develop into three different formations. Fringing reefs occur along shorelines, and are frequently found on Hawaii and the Caribbean. Barrier reefs are formed offshore, and occur often in the Indo-Pacific and Caribbean. Atolls are reefs surrounding a lagoon, and are commonly found in the Indo-Pacific. Though different in appearance and location, each reef is part of the larger coral reef biome.…
