Little Shop of Horrors
Title: Little Shop of Horrors
Type: Musical Script
Author: Howard Ashman

The story of Little Shop of Horrors is about a young man named Seymour Krelborn who is a nerdy orphan working at Mushnik’s flower shop in urban Skid Row. He has a big crush on fellow co-worker Audrey. One day Seymour comes across a strange mysterious unidentified plant which he purchases and names Audrey II. Seymour later discovers that the plant feeds on blood and soon it begins to sing for its supper. Audrey has a cruel and brutal dentist boyfriend named Orin and soon enough, Seymour ends up feeding Orin to the plant. Now Audrey II wants to take over the world.

Little Shop of Horrors is a musical based on a man eating plant. What I liked about reading this script was how it was written, and how the character personalities came through so well in the dialogue and it was clear how the characters might sound. For example there is a small group called The Ronnettes and they are 3 street urchins who narrate the whole show. They are hip, funky and bratty in character. Here is an extract of some dialogue between the Ronnettes and Mr Mushnik the shop owner.

Mr Mushnik “Urchins, get off the stoop!”
Ronnette “We’re not bothering anybody are we Crystal?’
Crystal “No we’re not Ronnette.”
Mr Mushnik “You ought to be in school.”
Chiffon “We’re on the split shift.”
Crystal “Right, we went to school till the fifth grade, and then we split.”
Mr Mushnik “How do you intend to better yourselves?”
Ronnette “Better ourselves? Did you hear what he said, better ourselves? Mister, when you from Skid Row, ain’t no such thing!”

Another great example of the characters personality coming through in the dialogue is with the character Audrey. Audrey is a blond headed girl and is unhappy about her current abusive relationship with Orin the dentist. She sings about her true dreams of a perfect life with Seymour, and through this she is seen as vulnerable and how she is defenceless against Orin the

Influence is the capacity or power of persons to produce an effect on the actions of others. Victor Flemming, the director of the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, depicts a message that revolves around the reversal of power and gender roles. Moreover, Dorothy is a child in her physical presence but lives the role of a hero as she leads the scarecrow, lion, and tin man to the Wizard himself. Through the archetypes such as the hero being a women, Cultural values, and the stages of the journey, Flemming raises the argument that in this case those who don 't have much influence in society are very influential in the Emerald City.…

I am only 41 pages into the book at the moment and I haven't seen very many characters yet, but the ones that have been introduced are very... special. One such character is named Chipper Maxton. He is a very self-centered, greedy, and lustful man that only took over ownership of his father's nursing home so that he could scam the residents and their families by skimming funds out of the payment that were meant for supplies and management for himself. He is having an affair with his secretary. Chipper only does things that would benefit him, and this is clearly shown if not through his dialogue then through the way the narrator describes him. The narrator also has an interesting way of narrating. They talk as if we are flying like ghosts and…

In this play, Little Shop of Horrors, we watched an employee, Seymour, working at a struggling flower shop, Mushnik's Skid Row Florist's. Seymour, along with his fellow employee Audrey and his boss Mr. Mushnik and three street kids who narrate the play, are all lamenting their place in life. One day, Seymour brings into the flower shop an exotic plant that he doesn’t know the origin of, only that it appeared after an eclipse. The play follows Seymour and the flower shop and their rise to fame because of the newly acquired plant “Audrey II” (named after his fellow employee whom he is secretly in love with). After trying to feed and take care of the plant in all the ways he knows how, Seymour finds out that this plant requires blood to grow.…

    The Shining

All of the very base elements of horror are certainly still present inThe Shining. There is a villain, who (or that) is out to destroy someone (it is arguable whether the hotel wants to destroy Jack or his family, or both). There is certainly a supernatural element, made all the more intriguing by the mention of the Indian burial ground, and the ambiguous ghostly ending. Kubrick even alludes to the supernatural or ghost element through his use of cutting. When Stuart Ullman (Barry Nelson) and Bill Watson (Barry Dennen) greet Jack and offer to show him around, Jack says “I better collect my family first,” and he moves further into the hotel as the scene fades into another. The method of this particular dissolve makes the people translucent first so that if the film is paused at 20:44, Jack appears very ghostlike gliding deeper into the hotel to “collect” his family. Kubrick even has a modified chase scene at the end of the film. Slightly foreshadowing the Friday the 13th films, when Jack begins to chase Danny through the hotel, Danny runs along ahead of the plodding, limping, demented Jack, and the audience is led to believe that he will be unable to escape. Of course, Danny does escape and Kubrick instead allows Jack to kill Dick Hallorann (Scatman Crothers). Kubrick gives the audience one very violent moment in a film that the audience expects to be very violent. Given the other films released in near proximity such as The Amityville Horror or Alien, audiences of the time were surely expecting a gruesome and violent movie the likes of which the previously mentioned films had not reached. Kubrick, as always, instead gave the audience a psychological thriller that played (and alluded) more to the likes of Psycho than any of the gore films of the time.…

The premise of the story is initially based on the supernatural and the central character uses paranormal ideas to shed light on various plot points. However, many aspects could quite easily be explained by the Uncanny. Going even further into Freud's and Todorov's theories, one might find several psychological causes for Nathaniel's madness and his subsequent actions. Hoffmann brilliantly crafted a story in which there are various explanations and possible meanings behind the events that occur. The reader struggles in the realm of the Fantastic, trying to distinguish whether the events are hallucinations or reality…

The lyrics made famous by Frank Sinatra and many others say, “Two drifters off to see the world. There’s such a lot of world to see.” This song “Moon River” was played in the movie version of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and in my opinion sums up Holly Golightly. In the original book version of Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Truman Capote uses Holly Golightly, a “lost soul” searching for her place to belong as a symbol that all anyone really wants in life is to find a place where they feel they belong.…

The movie begins appropriately with the lead Holly Goligthly having breakfast outside of Tiffany’s in New York and already that sets the tone of the whole movie. She’s dressed in a black Givenchy dress and her hair resembles something of a pineapple. She is looking in to the store and we see her perfectly polished reflection in the well-polished windows. Appropriately I say, since the title says just that, Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Even though is seems unimportant, just a title, Tiffany’s plays a central role throughout the movie but not just as a location for several of the scenes. It represents everything Holly wants and doesn’t seem able to get or allow herself to want.…
