I do think the narrator is a dynamic character because in the beginning and throughout most of the story. “Brother” was only helping Doodle because he didn’t want to be embarrassed at school, and didn’t really want to help him. He also felt some negativity towards Doodle because he has to bring him everywhere he goes. With his disability the narrator thinks he will be made fun of at school. But at the end of the story when the narrator finds Doodle dead in the storm he realizes that he actually loves his brother and they became really close to each other.…

For the cover, I selected images of events and symbols of events that occurred in Little Brother. The colllapsed bridge represents the terrorist attack on the Bay Bridge that spiraled San Francisco into it’s version of a police state. The bug and the phone awaiting passcode are mental punishments that the DHS inflicted on Marcus when they tortured him into giving them his passcode and continued monitoring him. Marcus constantly wrote code, ratifying the laptop, and showed his love for it with statements like “I never thought I’d be paid to write code,”(Doctorow 154). Marcus was held in a secret prison alone in a cell where he was tortured. In San Francisco, to punish the riotting XNetters, the police would rain pepperspray…

Robert Peel once said, “The police are the public and the public are the police; the police being only members of the public who are paid to give full time attention to duties which are incumbent on every citizen in the interests of community welfare and existence”. This means that everyone is responsible for the safety of themselves as well as the general population. Even though the police are in roles of power, they are also regular people to, meaning they aren’t above the law. In the short story, “My Parents’ Bedroom,’ written by Uwem Akpan, the most defining role of literacy that sticks out is symbolism. The images that are engraved into readers brains are ones that have deeper meanings than what we initially see on the surface. The story is told through the eyes of a little girl named, Monique, who is only nine years old. It is told in first person point of view so that the reader feels as if he/she is actually experiencing the situations first hand. The symbolism in the story, “My Parents; Bedroom,” illustrates the day to day struggle of living in Africa during the genocide. Symbolism is integrated in the story through her parents, different religious groups, and the biggest sign, the crucifix.…

In the essay, “Tabula Asiae”, written by Michael Ondaatje, is a myriad of mythical imagery that describes old portraits of Ceylon. The descriptive details used throughout the nonfiction work is captivating and aids in describing Ondaatje brother’s wall, which is located in Toronto. The nonfiction piece of writing is a personal essay, which contains multiple personal experiences. There are to forms of nonfiction prose that are evident throughout Ondaatje’s essay; a slice of history and a sense of place. A slice of history provides rich content for the essay by providing historical facts and data about the island on the map. Without historical data about Ceylon, the reader would not be able to fully understand the map portraits that were lined up on the wall. A sense of place on the other hand, allowed Ondaatje to present a picture of Ceylon, by using sensory details that described the specific location. By using a slice of history and a sense of place, Ondaatje’s essay provides the reader with a clear understanding of the portraits of Ceylon.…

There are many types of prejudice in our world, but in the two literary works “Country Lovers” by Nadine Gordimer and “What it’s like to be a black girl” by Patricia Smith, racism is the prejudice that the characters are battling with. Unfortunately racism is a global problem, but these stories discuss racism in America. These writers have used their ability to write to discuss these problems by short story and poem. Many literary devices can be found in both of these works, but I will discuss point of view, symbolism, climax, theme, mood, and imagery. Literary devices enhance the reading experience and the underlying meaning of a story. The conflict in common in "Country Lovers" by Nadine Gordimer and "What it's like to be a black girl" by Patricia Smith is Individual versus society because the characters in both literary works are struggling with racism in their society.…
