Literature and Poetry
Literature (from Latin litterae (plural); letter) is the art of written work. The word literature literally means: "things made from letters". Literature is commonly classified as having two major forms—fiction and non-fiction—and two major techniques—poetry and prose.
Literature may consist of texts based on factual information (journalistic or non-fiction), a category that may also include polemical works, biographies, and reflective essays, or it may consist of texts based on imagination (such as fiction, poetry, or drama). Literature written in poetry emphasizes the aesthetic and rhythmic qualities of language—such as sound, symbolism, and metre—to evoke meanings in addition to, or in place of, ordinary meanings, while literature written in prose applies ordinary grammatical structure and the natural flow of speech. Literature can also be classified according to historical periods, genres, and political influences. While the concept of genre has broadened over the centuries, in general, a genre consists of artistic works that fall within a certain central theme; examples of genre include romance, mystery, crime, fantasy, erotica, and adventure, among others.
Important historical periods in English literature include Old English, Middle English, the Renaissance, the Elizabethan era of the 16th century (which includes the Shakespearean era), the 17th Century Restoration period, the 18th century Age of Enlightenment, the Romanticism of the early 19th century, the later 19th Century Victorian, and 20th Century Modernism and Post-modernism. Important intellectual movements that have influenced the study of literature include feminism, post-colonialism, psychoanalysis, post-structuralism, post-modernism, romanticism, and Marxism.

Finding the definition of a word is very simple. Typically, it would be beneficial to pull out a dictionary and find the textbook definition. This is not the case for the word literature. Although it can be found, pinpointing a concrete definition is nearly impossible. But, one characteristic that literature must have is the ability to stand the tests of time. When examining A Secret Sorrow by Karen Van der Zee and A Sorrowful Woman by Gail Godwin, it is easy to conclude that the latter is a true piece of literature. This can be seen by comparing the characters, symbolism, and plotline of both stories.…

Literature is a broad term that is hard to define because there are no specific guidelines to determine it. “Some kinds of fiction are literature and some are not; some literature is fictional and some is not; some literature is verbally self-regarding, while some highly-wrought rhetoric is not literature” (Eagleton 9). Literature can even vary from person to person depending on their opinion. The graphic novel, V for Vendetta, by Alan Moore, should also be considered literature due to its real-world themes, complex plot, and its ability to influence the audience.…

The definition of a lawsuit is a civil action brought in court in which a plaintiff demands another person, known as the defendant, pay this person equitable resolve (dictionary.com). In other words they want payment for being wronged in the past. If the case is found to be legitimate and proven justifiable, the defendant pays the plaintiff the awarded compensation. This brings us to the story, The Lawsuit, by Naguib Mahfouz. This tale is about a son being sued by his father’s widow demanding maintenance be paid to her some twenty years after the father’s death. Several of the individuals in this story serve very little purpose. These characters, known as flat characters, are used in a fictional role, in which they do not experience considerable change or growth throughout the course of the story (Wiehardt). Other characters, called round characters, supply the story with an individual who encounters controversy and is changed by it in some way (Wiehardt). They tend to play a larger role and are more fully described in the creative writing helping the story take shape. The round characters justify their roles to the reader by being complex and showing change throughout the course of the story. They help the story tell its tale, offering details.…
