Songs
Killing An Arab by The Cure
History
Composer Robert Smith has said that the song "was a short poetic attempt at condensing my impression of the key moments in L'Étranger (The Stranger) by Albert Camus". The lyrics describe a shooting on a beach, in which the Arab of the title is killed by the song's narrator; in Camus' story the protagonist, Meursault, shoots an Arab on a beach, overwhelmed by his surroundings. Meursault is condemned for his honesty about his feelings. He is considered an outsider (or "stranger") because "he refuses to lie" and "doesn't play the game".
Lyrics
Standing in the beach with a gun in my hand, With a gun in my hand, Staring at the sea, Staring the sand, Staring down the barrel, At the Arab on the ground, I can see his open mouth, But I hear no sound
I’m alive, I’m dead, I’m the stranger, Killing an Arab
I can turn, And walk away, Or I can fire the gun, Staring at the sky, Staring at the sun, whichever I choose, it amounts to the same, absolutely nothing
I’m alive, I’m dead, I’m the stranger, Killing an Arab
I feel the steel butt jump, Smooth in my hand, Staring at the sea, Staring at the sand, Staring at myself, Reflected in the eyes, of the dead man on the beach, The dead man on the beach
I’m alive, I’m dead, I’m the stranger, Killing an Arab

Flight of Icarus by Iron Maiden

The song is loosely based on the ancient Greek myth of Icarus who was imprisoned with his father Daedalus in the palace of Knossos on Crete. In an attempt to escape, the pair fabricated wings from feathers and wax so they could fly away. Unfortunately Icarus, not heeding the advice of his father, flew too close to the Sun, melting the wax that held the feathers and thus fell to his death in the sea. Vocalist Bruce Dickinson modified the original tale to make it an allegory of teenage rebellion against adult authority, which caused the death of Icarus in this case.
Lyrics
As the sun breaks, above the ground,
An old man stands on

The dynamics of the song are very representative of the feeling the lyrics try to convey. The opening music, along with lyrics like “fallin’ all over myself” and “Blood loss in a bathroom stall”, helps tell the story of Kiedis in the middle of his heroin addiction. Kiedis also uses lyrics like “sarcastic mister know it all”, “with the birds I’ll share, this lonely view”, and “wave good-bye to ma’ and pa’” to describe the strained relations his addiction has caused. The middle crescendos as the lyrics lighten, to brighten the feeling of the song. Lyrics like “step outside but not to brawl” and “autumn’s sweet we call it fall” tell the story of Kiedis conquering his demons, and give the listener an almost happy feeling. The end of the song gives a serene feeling as Kiedis mends relationships and becomes content with where he is in life, despite all of the chaos. The lyric “With the birds I’ll share, this lonely view” is repeated several times throughout the song. In the…

The sun beams down, its smoldering rays spread to all they can reach. In the distance there stands a man, Monsieur Meursault, his hand in his pocket clenching the trigger of a gun. He stands there, watching another man along the beach, the Arab, anticipating him to make a move. And at the sight of seeing the Arab move, Meursault raises the gun and shoots -- hesitates a moment more then, fires four more shots at the now still body.…

“Once you’re up against it, the precise manner of your death has obviously small importance” (Camus, 71). The Stranger, written by Albert Camus is a tragedy book based on the story plot of a man named Meursault who is a psychologically and socially detached individual. He is also known to be amoral, not caring or knowing what is right or wrong and sees feelings in a physical sense. In one scene of the book, his mother had passed away and instead of grieving, he impassively looks at his mother’s grave and refuses the re-opening of the casket, which surprises many. He is also not responsive to human emotions such as desires and love. When the prospect of marriage was mentioned by his recent lover, Marie Cardona, he responds with “If she was keen…

The chorus of the song mainly deals with the nomadic living they had to live after their expulsion by the British because they were people of French ancestry and they were afraid of being backstabbed. The driftwood which floats on the ocean trying to reach the shore and the mention of the “gypsy tail wind” are an indication of that. You are thrown around with no destination because a cold front, the enemy came, and took away your land.…

The mood of the beach changed when Meursault took the gun from Raymond and said he would shoot “if the other [Arab] moves in, or if he draws his knife…” (Camus 56). The extreme heat burning on Meursault’s back pressured him causing for Meursault to finally crack. As Meursault was walking toward the spring, he kept an we on the Arab making sure he does not move or draws his knife. The sun was burning on his cheek and all the veins on Meursault’s forehead were throbbing under the skin. Meursault cannot stand the burning of the sun anymore so he moves forward. “...[He] wouldn’t get the sun off [himself] by stepping forward.” (Camus 59). Meursault continues to realize that he cannot escape the sun’s heat. The blindness of the bright light comes back affecting Meursault's actions. The Arab drew his knife, gelding it up to Meursault in the sun. The Arab uses the knife to reflect a light to Meursault’s forehead causing sweat to drop down over his eyelids all at once blinding Meursault. Meursault being blinded and heat still burning, pressuring on his back, Meursault pulls the…

The Nobel recipient Albert Camus’s The Stranger is arguably his most influential and best known work, written in 1942. The Algerian-born Camus’s novel explores various philosophical schools of thought, including absurdism, nihilism but most importantly existentialism. The protagonist of The Stranger is a French man, called Meursault, who seemingly can not fit into the society of French Algeria and thus into the Arab culture. In the very beginning, we get to know about the death of Mersault’s mother, however, he does not seem to be affected by the loss at all, he is not even willing to see her mother for a last time. Meursault is completely indifferent towards the world and the society itself, being completely uninterested in what he does and why he does these things. Another example to his aloofness is when he lends a helping hand to his neighbour, Raymond who wants to assault his former girlfriend sexually and physically, however, Raymond is then arrested and taken to court but Meursault testifies so that Raymond is only given a warning. The climax of the story is when the Arab friend of Raymond’s girlfriend…

Albert Camus was one of the most renowned authors during the early twentieth century. With writings such as The Stranger, and The Plague, Camus has struck the world of literature with amazing works that are analyzed to a great extent. This amazing success was not just handed to Camus on a silver platter however; Albert endured many hard times and was often encumbered with great illness in his short life. These hardships that Camus had to face, emphasized in his writings and literature. Camus’ work is very closely related to songs written and sung by a band named Queen. Queen’s song, “Bohemian Rhapsody”, is one of few songs, that correlate to Albert Camus views on the Absurd, which consist of simplifying the point of philosophy to mean life, a reasoning that the world, in general, is not a reasonable place, and realizing the consequences to believing in the absurd.…

During the first half of the song, I noticed the rhythm and beat rather then the lyrics and made a huge connection. The rhythm and beat in the beginning is slow, soft and gentle, much like a young innocent girl. As the song goes on, the rhythm and beat gets much louder and faster; it is almost as if the little girls innocence is being taken away from her. The first verse tells of a young girl who had high expectations (When she was a girl/She expected the world); these expectations could be the product of constant attention to fairy tales - expecting the world to be fair and just, where all girls can be princesses, marry their Prince Charming and live happily ever after. In my opinion, this is where one of the major themes of existentialism plays a role in the song. Existentialism is a philosophical theory or approach that emphasizes the existence of the individual person as free and responsible determining his or her own development through acts of the will. An existentialism theme that is present in this verse is known as absurdity. The un-realistic thoughts of prince charming, princesses and living happily ever after are all absurd because they do not happen or do not exist. Absurdity is the state or quality of being widely unreasonable. However, evidently the bar was raised too high for this young girl and the expectations not reached (‘But it flew away from her reach’) suggesting maybe a life not lived - dreams not followed, opportunities missed, feelings not acted upon. At this, the girl withdraws into her mind; acting out the life she would…
