The image of hero plays a significant role in British literature. In Beowulf, Beowulf is a leader of men than a king, and defined as epic hero. In contrast, in King Lear, Lear is a King at the beginning, but fall from grace at the end, and defined as tragic hero. There are similarity and differences between epic and tragic hero through out the two passages given.
First, the two passages “king Lear” and “Beowulf” come from the very end of the story, where

An epic hero is based on the Epic Tradition found firstly in the Epic of Gilgamesh, written in 2300 BC. He is usually a fearsome, strong warrior; always holds a position of power, such as Gilgamesh is a king, Beowulf is a leader of men then a king; he usually has some kind of religion; he learns something after completing a great journey; he is always concerned with his own mortality.

A Tragic Hero was created by Shakespeare; he is the example of the 'human hero', for example 'Othello'. A tragic hero represents a human at his best, either as a leader of an army, a king, etc, but through the course of the narrative falls from grace. It is the concept that our human flaws (Greed, fear, jealousy) bring our downfall.

Tragic heroes and Epic heroes; to the average person, they may think there is no difference. To a student in Mrs. Mroz’s Honors LA class, they know that there is much more to it than that they are both just heroes. Yes, they both have hero at the end, but it is the Epic and Tragic in the font that really matter. A tragic hero, unlike an epic hero, usually does not have a happy ending and also does not have to be entirely good nor evil, which is surprising to most. Whereas with an epic hero, he may have to deal with supernatural beings and is said to often perform courageous, sometimes super human deeds.

In the play Beowulf, Beowulf, the main character is the exact image of an epic hero. One of the main characteristics of an epic hero is his informal speech

The definition of a tragic hero was a great or virtuous character in a dramatic tragedy that was destined for downfall, suffering, or defeat. A tragic hero was a literary character who made an error of judgment or had a fatal flaw that, combined with fate and external forces, brings on tragedy. A tragic hero is usually good, but makes bad decisions, associated with a tragic flaw that haunts the character throughout the story. In the Iliad, Achilles played a large role in the battle between the Greeks and the Trojans. In the beginning of the book, Achilles’ prize possession was taken from Agamemnon. For much time, he was being childish, lamenting over his stolen lovely haired women. When the Greeks were in a battle with the Trojans, he was still too upset to come and fight with the Greeks. Agamemnon really wanted him to come, so he bribed him with towns, rivers, and more respect, but he still refused. Later on in the story, Achilles’ friend died, Patroclus, so he came back to battle mainly to kill Hector, a Trojan. Though, Achilles was a tragic hero, he still was a great character who will always be remembered. Swift footed Achilles murdered several Trojans, scared off enemies, and killed Hector, an enemy of the Greeks. Achilles still remained a tragic hero because his flaw was to act selfish, mainly come to war to seek revenge, and didn’t return back to battle for the right, heroic reasons.…

The Oxford Concise Dictionary of Literary Terms (OCDLT) and Arthur Miller both define a tragic hero as a character in a play or drama, most likely the protagonist, who is made victim to a circumstance within the plot. To this extent, Arthur Miller's definition of a tragic hero varies because he believes "the common man is as apt a subject for tragedy in its highest sense as kings were [and] the tragic feeling is evoked in us when we are in the presence of a character who is ready to lay down his life, if need be, to secure one thing—his sense of personal dignity" (Miller, 1633), meaning that mankind keeps tragedy above all forms because they are given the same mental abilities as the nobles and you do not have to be of nobility to be a tragic hero.…

A tragic hero is one that has a major flaw and for whom the audience usually feels pity, sympathy, empathy, and compassion. The tragic hero is someone great, but not perfect. They are often a noble person in terms of birth but also in terms of their character. The flaw in the character is what often leads to his/her downfall. When the hero falls, it is at least partly if not completely his own fault. On the other hand, it's not because he is a bad person but because of the character flaw he has or because of plain bad luck. What happens to the hero is too harsh. The character flaw that might have caused the downfall doesn't deserve the punishment that he gets. If the hero lives then through the experience he realizes what caused his downfall and what he could have done to prevent it, so he grows and learns through the misfortune. The classic example is Macbeth. While there were other factors contributing to his downfall, one of the main ones was his ambition to be king. That was his tragic flaw and caused him to be open to his mother's manipulation. After that, everything kind of went downhill, to understate the situation a bit... There are many examples of how Santiago was tragic hero in the old man in the sea. Santiago in the old man and the sea was known as a loser he did not have any friends but he did mentor a young boy named manolin and had the worst of luck. Santiago was outlawed by manolins parent because he had the worst of luck because of this the boy could not go fishing with him because his parents thought he was too unlucky. Santiago hadn’t caught a fish in 87 days and everyone said he would never catch a fish again but Santiago didn’t believe them. Santiago decided to go out to the deep deep waters and try to fish because he wanted to get a monster marlin on the line to prove himself. When Santiago was out in the deep ocean he had hooked a marlin and was fighting the marlin for 3 days. Santiago had the struggle of when…
