We see Thomas automatically seeing girls basketball at a very low level just because they are feminine. This passage helped him understand that he in fact was incorrect and slowly but surely, he develops maturity.

Literary devices in this passage are introduced with sarcasm which happens to include a bit of foreshadowing as well. It is clear for the reader what Thomas meant when he said “would I be here if she wasn't?” Likewise, there are plenty of instances where imagery is being used. The author uses them in attempt to help the reader visualize the action that is going on. For instance, the statement “The other team's centre had to be half a head taller.” is a great example of imagery written by the author. The author made the entire passage occur in the basketball court in attempt to make the reader understand more about gender equality.
