In 1990 Pro Football Center Mike Webster had officially retired from the NFL. He played a total of 245 games and won 4 Super bowls. Simply to put it he was one of the best in the game. But where the real issue happened was after his career. Post-Retirement Webster suffered from amnesia, dementia and depression. And even though friends offered to help, Webster still lived out of a pick-up truck or in train stations between Wisconsin and Pittsburgh. His life eventually culminated when he passed of heart attack at 50 years old in 2002. His body was then autopsied by Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office where Dr. Bennett Omalu then diagnosed Webster with Chronic traumatic encephalopathy or (CTE). …show more content…
Only 5. PHD Kevin M. Guskiewicz found that after a player returns from the first concussion they have a 92% chance of having another within 10 days of the first. It is not will but when, and studies show it’s within 10 days. It’s a silent killer, the CDC found that after a concussive blow 47% don’t feel the symptoms. For instance I’ve had a concussion; I passed the 5 day protocol and was excited to return. And on the very first play, I took a blow to the head and was concussed again. For instance the Washington Post reported Virginia schools and teams reported 1,758 overall concussions in 2013-14. Emphasis on Reported. You see, in a game where you are stigmatized if you don’t return to play many times players forget about the pain in the final moments and return to play. PHD Michael Collins studied this stigma and found that of the 486 patients included in the final analysis, 148 or (31 %) patients did not report concussion symptoms. And when reported this is almost useless simply because CTE is caused by the repeated hit, the small ringers that hurt for a second then go away. As I’ve stated, Michigan University found that a high school football player takes about 652 impacts over a 12-13 week season. The hits add up and eventually leave the brain concussed. Michigan also cited a concussion usually occurs at 90 to 100 G’s, roughly the equivalent of smashing your head against a wall at 20 mph. Researchers have even found that the most advanced helmets on average only reduce traumatic brain injury by 20%. Now you might be wondering how many kids have CTE at this very moment, well that one is one I do not know, because the only known way to find out is by post mortem autopsy. And if you were to magically know, there is no known cure. Once developed the brain digresses and fails, and often times many die before the brain
