I have left for extended periods for professional or academic ventures in the past but Vanessa and I both are deeply rooted in my parent’s home. Between December of 2008 and July of 2009 Vanessa lost a grandmother, two great grandmothers and a great grandfather. She was blessed with seven years of her life in which she was able to get to know the generation of people that she had come from. In 2005 her father moved in with his elderly mother and grandmother after his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer; shortly thereafter my maternal grandfather began to rapidly deteriorate, physically and mentally, at which time he moved in with us. Vanessa gained a great respect for the elderly as well as life experiences and knowledge one can only gain by exposure to older generations; however, these blessings came with lessons in illness and death and the real life challenge of coping with the sadness of end of life deterioration and the loss of loved ones. Vanessa understood that death was the inevitable end to life in the flesh, but she also understood that her loved ones were starting a new life in heaven. Instead of displaying exclusively classic signs of grief that would normally be seen in a child her age under the circumstances, she approached coping with a bitter sweet perspective that…

I was working on a school project when I got a call from my dad saying he was coming right away to come pick me up, I remember the sheathing anger I felt arguing that no he wasn’t going to pick me up that I really needed to finish this school project. I still shake my head in dismay knowing the fact I in fact didn’t need to finish the project I just wanted to hang out with my friends. I can’t pretend that I didn’t sulk my way to my dad’s waiting vehicle that I looked at him with a scowl across my face. Nor can I wipe away from my memory the words he said next “Your sister is in the hospital, she’s lost her baby and she’s asking for you.” This complete wash of emotion that came over me the shame the concern I was mortified with myself. In our family it has never been roses throughout. Death rocked our family too early and saw my father, our first born—Rabson, and our second born—Miriam past on in a space of less than 5 years. Rabson was born on 14th July 1969. He died on 20th May 2005. Unfortunately, Rabson fathered no child. Miriam was born on 11th March 1971 and she died on 23rd May 2005. She was not married, but a single mother with 3 children. These children are now under my custodian. It was very devastating to loss both my brother and sister in the same week. Life to me almost lost any meaning at all! But I shall always live to thank God for the pastor like Pastor Edwin G. Phiri who has been on my side with my friend Maybin…
