Why we should use GNU/Linux Distributions

There are various reasons why you should drop Windows and Mac OS X, but there are also reasons why you should drop Linux and grab a copy of Windows or an overpriced Macintosh computer. Let’s start with why you SHOULDN’T use GNU/Linux *I know this is a persuasive essay, but I won’t be too biased. I have to try them out and compare them before judging which is superior to the other*

1. If you like to play a lot of games. Some people pay up to a thousand dollars for a gaming rig *Rig is an alternative name for a computer*, and 2 thousand more if it’s a Macintosh, because not only do you have to buy a Mac Pro, and if you want to play every game out there, you have to pay for Windows 7, and download the games off of Steam *Which most aren’t cheap, might I add, but there are other market places you can buy games off of, but Steam is the most popular*.

2. If you absolutely can’t live without Netflix, and that means you can’t bear to find an alternative *I admit, I miss Netflix too, but I can go without it* then Linux is not for you... yet, Netflix has given support for Linux-based devices such as Android *Yes, Google’s Android runs the Linux Kernel* and Google’s new Chrome OS *Or Chromebooks which ALSO run the Linux Kernel* but not Linux. Silverlight is controlled by Microsoft, and they do not want to release the source code to the public, so Linux engineers have to reverse engineer it, and most of the times, Open Source variants are not as good as the proprietary. The outcome of it all was Moonlight, but Moonlight was not as good as Silverlight, and thus is the reason why Netflix will not run on Linux yet. To add to what I said before, Netflix is announcing HTML5 support for it, so any one using Google Chrome/Chromium, regardless of the OS will be able to use Netflix.

3. If you are very slow to change, which means that if you only use Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 8 because you don’t care as long as it works, or

Three different operating systems are Microsoft Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. I would recommend Microsoft Windows because that’s the one I am most familiar with even though I hear a lot of good things about Mac OS X. It’s a very user friendly operating system. I am very experienced with Microsoft with having over 18 years of knowledge. They are constantly upgrading and making improvements each time they change the operating system. I also enjoy the…

One reason a Mac is often chosen over a PC is because of the price difference. Many people that set out to buy a brand new laptop want good quality. Good quality is often misinterpreted for a high price. While high price does not mean good quality, more than likely consumers that invest a decent amount of money into their laptops get what they have paid for. A Macbook generally is priced around $995 to $999. It is often called the $1,000 dollar laptop. Apple recently updated the Macbooks by adding more memory, redesigning the outside, and making it have a larger screen while keeping the price the same and at the $999. Getting an update without upping the price has got many consumers attentions and there is a hope that consumers truly are getting what they pay for.…

Mac computers are expensive and everyone knows that. What everybody doesn’t know is that in the long run they will inevitably save more money if they purchase one. With Boot Camp (which is free with any Mac) you can run any operating system simultaneously with Mac OS X, which basically gives you two computers for the price of one. Also if you were to buy a regular Macbook which starts at $1299 and took a Dell XPS M1330 and bought an upgraded battery to match that of the Macbook and also bought Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Elements which is the equivalent of iPhoto and iMovie applications which come free with iLife on any Macbook then the Dell would cost $1308 with all the upgrades to make it comparable to the Macbook. Also Macs aren’t targets of spyware and viruses to the degree of PC’s so you won’t have to spend money on maintenance and repair with Macs like you would a PC. (Common Myths)…

To begin, the cost of a computer can fluctuate from a few hundred dollars, to a few thousand dollars. A Macintosh differs from a PC immediately because a Mac is built for media programs. When purchasing a Macintosh computer, there are only three types of systems. Apple offers the iMac, MacBook, and Mac Pro. Each one of these unique machines is prebuilt and increases the cost of the computer drastically. On the other hand, a PC can be purchased in a variety of ways. For example, shopping online you can buy a $700 desktop computer that will satisfy the average user for a few years. In addition, you can select and purchase expensive parts for a gaming computer. A $1,500 customized Personal Computer can be built to run any advanced game with ease. However, a $3,000 MacBook will not be able to function as well as the customized gaming PC, and may encounter problems. The cost of an Apple MacBook will always be more expensive because they are all prebuilt, unlike most Personal Computers. Self-building your own PC has become the cheapest method of all, and allows for interchangeable parts in the future.…

Ever been in a computer store and a guy in a nice dress coat with Khaki pants and leather Gucci shoes on, walk and just chuckles at you because you are looking at a Windows PC? Well, chances are that it was either a Mac user. "Mac user interviewed and self-admitted as filling cool, artsy, higher in the social society, and often harassed PC owners trying to get them to switch”. (Firmin 2) If one wants to get more value for their money then they will want to look at nothing else but PC. If one was to take the money that a Mac owner spent and upgrade a PC with the same amount, they would have a much better system than the Mac owner. Macs hardware is well built and appealing but is expensive. Most of their laptops have SATA hard drives which are fast but are short on memory and don't come with DVD players or HDMI ports and the batteries are not removable. PCs on the other hand plenty of design, specification, and price options. Hardware for PC runs from topnotch to trash, with the prices matching the quality.…

Some people will say that there is nothing good on TV now days, well I for one would have to disagree with them. In today’s world there are just so many shows on that it is hard to say that. At my house we watch a lot of kid programs because we have a 17 month old and a newborn. The kid’s shows we watch have a lot of good qualities that they need to learn at an early age to help further them along with their learning and life’s choices. We like to watch Dora the Explorer or Jake and the Never land Pirates. Watching these programs helps to expand his thinking, or so I like to think.…

Some devices are very expensive and are used for a variety of things from business, simple word processing or gaming. Some device users become strong proponents of one platform or another, for example those who prefer apple commuters will not use a PC and vice versa, citing ability to install viruses and availability of software as their reasons for choosing. I think it is mostly what you learn on that may determine which platform one chooses. All machines imply a savviness of the modern technical world. (Watson, 2012)…
