Life Of Pi Quote Analysis
"I must say a word about fear. It is life’s only true opponent. Only fear can defeat life. It is a clever, treacherous adversary, how well I know. It has no decency, respects no law or convention, shows no mercy. It goes for your weakest spot, which it finds with unerring ease. It begins in your mind, always. One moment you are feeling calm, self-possessed, happy. Then fear, disguised in the grab of mild-mannered doubt, slips into your mind like a spy." (Martel 163) Pi was someone who you may never have thought could survive 227 days on a lifeboat with a tiger, but he did. He was able to overcome fear and use his beliefs to help him. He did this by using the beliefs that he learned in India and bringing them onto the lifeboat to help save …show more content…
Pi, when he was young, owned a zoo called the Pondicherry, when he was in the zoo he noticed how structured and repetitive the zoo’s feeding and cleaning systems were, so it was only natural that he seemed to pick up some of these habits himself. When animals were getting accustomed to the new environment, Pi noted that the animals had to have everything a certain way and at a certain time for the animal to feel comfortable and happy. They needed for these things to happen consistently so that they feel like they understand what was going to happen and when, they needed repetition to feel safe. This knowledge of repetition came in handy when he was moving to a new school. "Repetition is important in training not only animals but also humans" (Martel 23). So when Pi wanted to get rid of his old nickname "Pissing" he knew exactly how to make sure that everyone called him by the correct name and that was by repetition. Pi decided to create a ritual that he would do over in every class to make sure his point got across. "Before the teacher could say a word, I picked up the piece of chalk and said as I wrote: My name is Piscine Molitor Patel known to all as - I double underlined the first two letters of my given name - Pi Patel For good measure I

In Yann Martel’s Life of Pi, all attention is centered on the extraordinary life of Piscine Molitor Patel. He grows up in the Pondicherry Zoo in Southern India. He quickly develops a strong love for animals and is fascinated with every aspect of their lives. As he is growing up, he becomes a devout Hindu, Muslim, and Christian. When he is a teenager, his parents decide to try to achieve a better life by moving to Canada. They plan on taking the animals with them to sell to zoos in the United States. When they are about halfway into the voyage, something goes horribly wrong on the ship, and it begins to sink. Pi is thrown into a lifeboat, along with a few different animals. Initially, it was just a hyena, orangutan, and zebra; however, a tiger soon joins as well. The…

A “Change Of Heart” by Jeremy Rifkin explains how animals are more similar to a human that we ever expected, Rifkin tries to expand our empathy towards animals and makes us dig deeper into the world of animal rights. In this article the author brings up how animals have feelings such as pain, stress, affection, excitement, and love, more into the article the author gives us an example of how pigs get easily depressed if they don't get enough affection and people can relate in how if it only an “ animal “ how can it get depressed but heres is how animals are indeed much like a human but we keep making ourselves believe that they are inferior from us, the author also gives us another example of a gorilla from the gorilla foundation in northern…

Finding within it all the places it needs- a lookout, a place for resting, for eating and drinking, for bathing, for grooming-etc. – and finding that there is no need to go hunting, food appearing six days a week, an animal will take possession of its zoo space in the same way it would lay claim…” I disagree with the fact that the cages are the animal’s territory and home. Just because the cage can fulfill the basic needs (resting, look out, eating, and bathing) that doesn’t mean its territory. The animal is being forced to live in the cages and so it has to deal with the situation and cope with it. Where he says “… fulfilled by close by and safely” he is wrong. The bars around the cage aren’t for safety for the animals but for simply keeping it inside its cage. It’s a safety for us! How does this even make sense in the first place? It’s basically saying that, someone a human is forced to live in a cage where he/she will be supplied with food and calling that cage their home! Their safe, have a place to eat, rest, lookout… It’s the human’s territory and home now because it will stay there forcefully until it dies… You can also look at this like this. You see a lady bug crawling around. So you take a jar and cover it atop it. You give it food/water daily… So basically now the jar is its home…

Yann Martel’s novel, Life of Pi, is an inspirational story of a young boy fighting for his life as a castaway with the company of a Bengal tiger. Through his religious beliefs and perseverance he is able to survive, but with great difficulty. In an allegorical sense, this story is brilliant. Pi recreates his story using animals to metaphorically represent the humans who were in his treacherous, archetypal journey because it appeals to everyone more than the frank and straightforward story. Attraction to this allegory proves the deeper point that life is meaningless without believing in the beauty and art of the quest at hand.…

Despite the fact that he faced many struggles throughout the novel (majorly part 2), he managed to remain optimistic and determined to find a way to escape. In most cases, a person would have just given up under the circumstances he fell under, but Pi had faith in getting off the ship and finding land. He never gave up despite the fact that he knew that he'd never see his family again, and he had to survive for 227 days with a ferocious tiger, and little food. The odds against his survival were prominently against his favor, but that didn't stop him. He had to overcome his fear of killing animals in his struggle for survival. Pi went from hesitating to kill a fish, to becoming comparable to a professional fisherman. Although there were many thoughts going through his head to just jump off the boat and put an end to everything, his perseverance overcame his doubt and he did anything possible to…

There is a sense of irony in Yann Martel’s novel ‘Life of Pi’. “You are so bored you sink into a state of apathy so close to a coma…in your boredom there are elements of terror… and in the grip of terror -the worst storm- you yet feel boredom, a deep weariness with it all.”(p217) Pi feels terror yet in the midst of that terror is the ironic part; he’s bored. One would expect Pi to be hopeless while on the lifeboat, yet it’s the opposite. He is hopeful and believes one should find happiness anywhere one can find it. “You get your happiness where you can. You reach a point where you’re at the bottom of hell, yet you have your arms crossed and a smile on your face, and you feel you’re the luckiest person on earth. Why? Because at your feet you have a tiny dead fish.”(p217) most wouldn’t consider finding a dead fish lucky, but Pi does, for being in his situation changes one’s perspective and that finding a dead fish is lucky. What happens is the very…
