Life of Pi Humor
Life of Pi: Humor Mark Twain once said that, “Humor is mankind’s greatest blessing.” This could not be more true in Yann Martel’s novel, Life of Pi. In the novel, Pi, a sixteen year old Indian boy is shipwrecked in the Pacific Ocean. Pi is cast overboard into a lifeboat along with a tiger, orangutan, hyena, and a zebra. Pi is left to survive for two hundred and twenty seven days with his companion, a four hundred and fifty pound Bengal tiger. Humor is used throughout the whole novel to help Pi get through his ordeal. Humor breaks up tension and gives the novel a less serious tone. There are many examples of humor throughout the novel. One example is in towards the beginning of the novel when Pi discusses his childhood. Pi’s real name is Piscine Molitor Patel, but all the kids pronounce his name “pissing.” He finally gets rid of his horrible nickname by announcing that his name is “Pi” during role call at school. This example shows how the author uses humor to create a less serious tone. Also, towards the middle of the novel, while Pi is stranded out in the Pacific, he attempts to train Richard Parker. Pi humorously says, “Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, without further ado, it is my pleasure and honour to present to you: The Pi Patel, Indo-Canadian, Trans-Pacific, Floating Circuuusss!!!”(165). Humor is used in this example to show that Pi still has hope and is trying to make the most out of his horrible situation. Furthermore, the author uses humor in the very last chapter of the novel when Pi is being interviewed by Japanese officials. For example, when Pi is done telling the officials his story, they think that Pi is making it all up, so Pi makes up another story replacing all of the animals with humans. This is yet another example of how the author uses humor to help create a less serious tone in the novel. In conclusion, the use of humor in Life of Pi is prevalent throughout the novel and it is used to help break up tension and create a less serious

An example when Alexie’s character, Jackson Jackson used humor in this story was when he was awoken from a drunken comma on the railroad tracks by a police officer. As Jackson wakes up he recognizes Officer Williams, a good white cop with a sweet tooth. “I am taking you over to detox,” Officer Williams said. “No man, that place is awful. It is full of drunken Indians.” They both laughed and drove off. “I do not know how you guys do it” he said. “What guys?” Jackson asked. “You Indians. How the hell you laugh so much? I just picked your ass off the railroad tracks, and you’re making jokes.” he said. Jackson replied, “The two funniest tribes i have ever been around are Indians and Jew, so I guess that says something about the inherent humor of genocide.” In this conversation Jackson uses humor to find laughter in a situation where Indian stereotypes say that all Indians are alcoholics. A further meaning to this is that Jackson uses humor to get past this situation. When compared to his life, multiple divorces, flunking out of college, and being a homeless alcoholic, shows his capability of moving on past events the way he laughed off the comment about drunken…

The book Life of Pi by Yann Martel was published in 2001. The story is primarily about an Indian boy named Piscine Molitor Patel, who survives a shipwreck with a Bengal tiger. Unfortunately, this book is not a part of a series; the characters in the book do however, have an interesting relationship with the author. Yann Martel is from Canada, as stated in the book. The Patel family was moving to Canada, this is also the place Piscine “lives” currently. Martel got the inspiration from his story in Pondicherry, the originally home of the Patel family. Although the meeting of the two was in a sense ironic, it is still the perfect commencement for this realistic fiction.…

Humor in The Martian is apparent often, either when something bad or funny happens, such as in the beginning of the book when Mark has first been left on Mars: Mark Watney says, “I [Mark Watney] wonder how the Cubs are doing” (Weir 13). This quote is talking about how lonely Mark is without any human contact, but he still makes something comedic out of it by mentioning a sports team. Another example of the good humor in The Martian is when Mark is feeling ready to start exploring Mars: Watney sets the scene with, “The time has come (ominous musical crescendo) for some missions!” (Weir 71). This quote is poking fun at the idea of movies and shows that make missions sound so dramatic, which adds an element of humor to an otherwise serious matter. Overall, humor in The Martian occurs quite often in the book, and is an important part of what makes the book…

When Jimmy found out he had terminal cancer the first thing he turned to was humor. A witty remark or two was the only fall back Jimmy had in life. When his life was halted to a stop, he had two choices in life. He could have either accepted that he was going to die and turn into a cold-hearted soul or he could have made the rest of his days count in a joyous mood. Jimmy opted to choose the second. From the beginning of the story Jimmy could not help himself, and with every moment he got he made a joke. It is either at the expense of himself or his Aboriginal heritage. Humor if used properly can be used as a remedy, but if used wrong it could be taken in the wrong context and separate you from others. Not everyone is able to use it appropriately though. When Jimmy came to telling his wife about the cancer he referred to his tumor as a baseball, in both size and shape. Not only that, Jimmy used his humor negatively. “No really. I told her to call me Babe Ruth. Or Roger Maris. Or maybe even Hank Aaron…”(2) This referred to fact that when Hank Aaron was about to…

Some other comical factors is when reverend Parris has his tantrums but they aren’t even funny, because he is just lying to save his own reputation; ruining everyone else’s. Mrs. Putnam thinking Tituba had the power to allow her to communicate with her dead babies, could be considered funny. Other than she is dead serious, and assigns guilt ruthlessly. When mercy Lewis was caught dancing naked in the woods by Paris, would be funny except she lies compulsively and she condemned men and women to protect herself. There are a few comical moments in the book but over all this is a tragedy not a comedy.…

Pi begins to realize that he and Richard Parker are the only survivors of the sunken ship, and his survival mode takes a few days to kicks in. “I was alone and orphaned, in the middle of the Pacific, hanging on an oar, an adult tiger in front of me, sharks beneath me, a storm raging about me” (133). He knows he is alone with a 450-pound Bengal tiger, and that’s all he can think about. When survival mode kicks in, he begins to search the lifeboat for supplies and food that he would need in order to survive. Pi also realizes that he must make it clear to Richard Parker that he is the alpha male on the lifeboat in order for his life to be spared by the incredible cat. Pi is extremely alienated from all things on this lifeboat. Obviously he is alienated from his homeland while being stranded on a lifeboat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. He is also alienated from his family, seeing as they have all drowned from the ship sinking. He has never been stranded on a boat before. He has no idea what to do. Everything he has been accustomed to at his home on land no longer applied to his life now on the ocean. As Said had said, the sadness of being exiled could never be surmounted. Pi felt this sadness. “That second night at sea stands in my memory as one…

    Life of Pi Symbolism

Karanvir Dhami Ms. Yu ENG3U March 7, 2011 Symbolism in Life of Pi In Life of Pi there are many literary devices used to present the different themes in the novel. The main literary device used in Life of Pi is symbolism. Symbolism is often used to represent an object to something else, either by association or by resemblance. Most of the names of animals, objects and even humans in this novel have a symbolic meaning. In Yann Martel’s Life of Pi, symbolism such as pi’s name, the colour orange and the algae island, are used throughout the novel to provide Pi with protection to help him either survive or overcome his emotional pain. The mathematical pi is undefined, infinite and unable to be understood, just like Piscine Patel. Piscine’s nickname is Pi and it has a symbolic relationship with the mathematical pi. Pi is sixteen when he is shipwrecked, and pi is also the sixteenth letter of the Greek alphabet. Not only is the mathematical pi symbolic towards Pi, but it also provided him protection from school. Many of Pi’s classmates made fun of his full name and called him names such as “Pissing Patel”. When Pi transferred to a new school he took the first available opportunity to use his nick name, with “that Greek letter that looked like a shack … *Pi+ found refuge” (Martel, ). This nickname allowed him to find the protection from the bullying he would have got if he had used his actual name. The Greek letter symbolizes the roof the nickname has placed over Pi emotionally. Before the nickname was being used all his former classmates new him as only as…

The important thing isn’t that we can live on love alone, but that life isn’t worth living without it. In the novel Life of Pi by Yann Martel, the author tells a story of Piscine “Pi” Molitor Patel, who is struggling with religious and psychological issues. In addition to that, after the ship sinks Pi must survive on a life boat with a tiger for 227 days in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The Bengal tiger, Richard Parker was named after an Edgar Allen Poe character from The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket (1838). Pym and a friend leave Nantucket on a ship. It capsizes and the two find themselves on the hull of the ship with another survivor. Starvations lead them to killing him and eating him. The character that is lunched upon has the last name of Richard Parker. In Life of Pi, the author uses the symbolic character, Richard Parker to show that he is an essential part of Pi’s life.…

In the novel Life of Pi by Yann Martel, there are three themes that seem to overpower throughout; religion, fear, and hope. When the main character in the novel, Pi, is forced to move the family's zoo from Pondicherry India to Canada in search for a better life, their boat suddenly begins to sink in the middle of the pacific ocean. Miraculously Pi is the only human that survives. But unfortunately for this poor boy he is stuck on a 26 foot lifeboat with a zebra, an orangutan, a hyena, and a three year old bengal tiger named Richard Parker. The themes religion, fear, and hope are repeatedly stressed to try to get the reader to greater grasp the concepts of what Pi was going through while stranded on a lifeboat for 227 days. These three themes are also the driving forces that strive and help Pi to fight for his survival even when there are no signs of success..…
