Life of Pi
What’s In A Name? Yan Martel’s award winning novel, “Life of Pi”, is about the life of Piscine Molitor Patel, narrating many of the experiences he encounters that give light to many philosophies and ideologies about life. The protagonist in the story, Piscine Molitor, was named after a Parisian swimming pool, which was described in the story as a breathtaking area to take a good swim. However, Piscine having been fed up with the negative attention his name attracted in school, comes up with a new nickname for himself: Pi. Like many other concepts that Martel uses within the plot as a tool for readers to gain a better understanding on things, the two aforementioned meanings of his name is one of which the utilized. The two names of the protagonist in the story of “Life of Pi” is one of the many tools which Yan Martel uses to embody much more meaning than what meets the eye. The narration of how he acquired the name “Piscine Molitor” is told early on in the novel within the third chapter. This close association to a body of water foreshadows the entire second chapter where he spends in the Pacific Ocean, a much bigger body of water, as a cast-away for 227 days. Moreover, the controlled and confined features of a pool imply the concept of boundaries, (a concept which the author constantly used/ made to appear in the novel), like the boundary that Pi made between him and Richard Parker was an essential tool that kept them both alive and the boundary between fact and fiction discussed in the author’s note. Lastly, this analogy of Piscine to a pool embodies the massive depth of this character in terms of his religious beliefs and outlook on life. This may even be generally applied to the whole story, as one would constantly find deeper meanings and symbolisms to concepts and things all throughout. The protagonist then elaborates two chapters ahead of the aforementioned on how he gave birth to his new name for himself: Pi. The definition of this word is

Karanvir Dhami Ms. Yu ENG3U March 7, 2011 Symbolism in Life of Pi In Life of Pi there are many literary devices used to present the different themes in the novel. The main literary device used in Life of Pi is symbolism. Symbolism is often used to represent an object to something else, either by association or by resemblance. Most of the names of animals, objects and even humans in this novel have a symbolic meaning. In Yann Martel’s Life of Pi, symbolism such as pi’s name, the colour orange and the algae island, are used throughout the novel to provide Pi with protection to help him either survive or overcome his emotional pain. The mathematical pi is undefined, infinite and unable to be understood, just like Piscine Patel. Piscine’s nickname is Pi and it has a symbolic relationship with the mathematical pi. Pi is sixteen when he is shipwrecked, and pi is also the sixteenth letter of the Greek alphabet. Not only is the mathematical pi symbolic towards Pi, but it also provided him protection from school. Many of Pi’s classmates made fun of his full name and called him names such as “Pissing Patel”. When Pi transferred to a new school he took the first available opportunity to use his nick name, with “that Greek letter that looked like a shack … *Pi+ found refuge” (Martel, ). This nickname allowed him to find the protection from the bullying he would have got if he had used his actual name. The Greek letter symbolizes the roof the nickname has placed over Pi emotionally. Before the nickname was being used all his former classmates new him as only as…

In the novel Pi's actual name is Piscine Molitor Patel. His gets his name from the French word for pool, which specifically is the pool in which his friend Adirubasamy used to swim in. His name itself connects to the concept of water or ocean from the onset. This connection to water is used to exemplify the theme of surviving which could be a reason he is named Pi since he survived in an ocean for 227 days. Moving on Piscline's nickname is Pi which a mathematical expression for an irrational continuous number that starts with 3.14 and then continues with a repetition of words. This repetition basically exemplifies the repetition of Pi's routine to survive on the boat. Every day he woke with one goal which was to survive, and his name adds to the theme of persistence because with the repetition and persistence he might have not survived 227 days. Moreover the mathematical expression pi is used to calculate a circumference of a circle. A circle represents unity and I think the author used to this to add to theme of unity. On the boat Pi needed to befriend Richard Parker in order to survive and maybe without him he would have not survived. More specifically I think this connection to a circle represents the Chinese symbol for Yin and Yang which cannot exist without each other. Yin represents the negative side while Yang represents the positive, in connection to the positive represents Pi who is hopeful…

Pi begins to realize that he and Richard Parker are the only survivors of the sunken ship, and his survival mode takes a few days to kicks in. “I was alone and orphaned, in the middle of the Pacific, hanging on an oar, an adult tiger in front of me, sharks beneath me, a storm raging about me” (133). He knows he is alone with a 450-pound Bengal tiger, and that’s all he can think about. When survival mode kicks in, he begins to search the lifeboat for supplies and food that he would need in order to survive. Pi also realizes that he must make it clear to Richard Parker that he is the alpha male on the lifeboat in order for his life to be spared by the incredible cat. Pi is extremely alienated from all things on this lifeboat. Obviously he is alienated from his homeland while being stranded on a lifeboat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. He is also alienated from his family, seeing as they have all drowned from the ship sinking. He has never been stranded on a boat before. He has no idea what to do. Everything he has been accustomed to at his home on land no longer applied to his life now on the ocean. As Said had said, the sadness of being exiled could never be surmounted. Pi felt this sadness. “That second night at sea stands in my memory as one…

Geography in literature can suggest new ideas about life in general. Possibly one of the most confusing parts in Life of Pi is when Pi gets stranded on the Algae Island. The geography exposes hidden meanings concealed in the story. I believe the algae island represents what happens when humans turn away from God and focus more towards secularist ideals. Soon you will be eaten up by your own ego, (i.e. the tooth in the tree.) However, Pi finds his faith again. This is represented by the boat. The boat never abandons Pi, which symbolizes Christ’s never-ending forgiveness toward us. There is a lot of material in part one about Pi’s trials of growing up. For example Pi gets bullied as a child for his name and has uncertainty about his religious stance. Consequently, the setting of the sinking boat and Pi’s journey in the life raft can represent a young man’s journey from adolescence to adulthood. Pi hesitates before leaving his parents room before the ship sank, which represents the desire to become independent. However, when he leaves and the ship sinks, he is forced to face the harsh world alone. The large ship represents family unity. The life…

The important thing isn’t that we can live on love alone, but that life isn’t worth living without it. In the novel Life of Pi by Yann Martel, the author tells a story of Piscine “Pi” Molitor Patel, who is struggling with religious and psychological issues. In addition to that, after the ship sinks Pi must survive on a life boat with a tiger for 227 days in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The Bengal tiger, Richard Parker was named after an Edgar Allen Poe character from The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket (1838). Pym and a friend leave Nantucket on a ship. It capsizes and the two find themselves on the hull of the ship with another survivor. Starvations lead them to killing him and eating him. The character that is lunched upon has the last name of Richard Parker. In Life of Pi, the author uses the symbolic character, Richard Parker to show that he is an essential part of Pi’s life.…

In “Part One: Toronto and Pondicherry”, the reader follows Pi’s thoughts, introducing them to his beliefs and ideologies. What contrasts Pi from any other sixteen year old, is that he questions his beliefs and independently inquires about religious practices. Pi is dissimilar to the student body of his school as he has been brought up in the peculiar environment of a zoo, leading him to have an advanced view on societal aspects of his community by comparing it to the animals in his home. Pi is not inevitably more intelligent than others his age; however, he is ambitious; he was eager to learn and to experience all he could, a very significant heroic quality. Ambition, a quality that is shared among many protagonists, can be a positive characteristic as much as it can be a flaw. Pi had controllable ambitions that do not require him to violate his ethics, vouchsafing him as a true hero.…

In the book Life of Pi the author Yann Martel wrote about a young boy named Pi Patel surviving on a lifeboat by himself. Throughout the entire book Pi was very close to religion and in the end his religions were the main reason he had survived. At the start of the book Yann Martel introduces three religions, Islam, Christianity, and Hinduism. There are three main points that aided in Pi’s survival. One being that Pi was open to religions and started to follow the Islamic faith. The second reason is that Islam believed that one should pray five times a day, and Pi did exactly this. The last reason is that the religion believes that suicide is completely forbidden and Pi was thinking of committing suicide on the boat. Pi believing and following the Islamic faith most defiantly helped him survive on the life boat.…
