What are your first impression of Trevor and his teacher Eugene? What personal qualities do they demonstrate in the film that show they believe in the beneficial powers of helping out and caring? My first impression of Trevor was that he was lost soul who lived in the shadows of his parents demons (especially his mother). Mr. Eugene seemed to be a man with a very kind soul and really wants to get his kids thinking about how they can subtly make the world a better place, but he's also struggling with his tragic past. They are both very compassionate, but Trevor seems to posess a little more childish fearless compassion.
How would you answer these questions that Eugene poses to his class on the first day of school: What does the world mean to you? How often do you think about things that happen outside this town? What does the world expect of you? Is the ideal of "interacting with the world," as Eugene describes Trevor's project, something you were taught as a child? Is service emphasized in your family, in your neighborhood, and in your religious community? What obstacles have gotten in the way of your heeding the call of the caring impulse within you?
The world is where I eat, breath, sleep, learn, interact with others and I want nothing more than to preserve its beauty and well being. Alas I am only one person and it takes cooperative effort to keep this world from drowning in a sea of social sin. I think a lot about what goes on outside my community because I choose to know what's going on, because sometimes what goesn beyond my white picket fences could possibly affect me. Yes I was definately taught by parents as a child to be in touch with the world because various family members lived around the world.
