The debate over the acceptability of lying is a complicated one. Some feel that it is morally wrong and only ever worsens a situation. Others feel that it is acceptable in cases where feelings could be hurt, or if a person’s self-esteem may be lowered. However, there are instances in which lying happens simply to avoid the consequences of a person’s actions, and most would agree that it is morally wrong. Instead of going back and forth between “lying is wrong” and “lying is okay sometimes,” a better use of our time would be learning to improve our honesty with ourselves and with the people around…

First off let me start of by saying that we lie. We all do. We exaggerate, we leave out things, we avoid confrontation, we try to be inconsideration of other people feelings, we conveniently forget some aspects of the truth and even keep secrets. Like most people, I find myself in situations of small falsehoods and still think of my self of an honest person. Sure I lie, but it’s not really bothering anyone or anything.…

Almost everyone lies. According to some researchers the average individual tells about 200 lies per day; face to face, spouse to spouse, parent to child, and in every other combination of human interaction possible (Meyers, 2011). Does this mean that these people lie with malicious intent every day? Not especially; people lie for a variety of reasons and it is after all a matter of degree and intent as to whether a reasonable person would take issue with a given lie. Let’s say that your child, niece, or grandson came to you with a picture they drew, that they were especially proud of seeking your approval and it was just scribble; do you lie and tell them it is beautiful, or crush them with the truth? Most caring people would spare the feelings of an innocent 3 year old and tell a so called ‘white lie’ bolstering the esteem of the burgeoning artist, but yet it is a false claim; a lie; a deception. From this innocuous plane onward, lies are told on escalating scales that ascend towards serious and ill intentioned lies. The Merriam Webster defines honesty in part as:” the quality of being…

Today society consists of good, yet dishonest company. Deceit is more common than uncommon and research has shown that on a daily basis, lies are consistent in every individual’s life. Lying, although normally portrayed as a negative influence on society, is used for a number of reasons. In particular lying may be used when someone becomes too hesitant to tell the truth, for fear of a response they would deem unenjoyable. Someone may lie to begin rumors; for a better feeling of self-esteem upon themselves or an associated clique. Even a body as huge and widespread as the government lies daily, whether it be for the greater good or not. Before someone reluctantly shuts out lying because it is deemed harmful and toxic to relationships among others, they must first take a step back and view the picture from an open-minded…

An example of lies being used for good was D-day. The opposing forces of the Nazi Party fed false information to them, so they would remove soldiers from one spot and move them somewhere else. This lead to an easy invasion by the Allies because there was little to no military units. This was a crushing blow the Nazi Party which lead to their downfall. This lie caused lots of Allied lives to be saved and the liberation of Germany from the Nazi Party. Lies can easily make people happy even if they think you’re lying to them. An example of this would be when people are having a “fat day” where they feel unattractive and you boost their self-esteem and confidence by telling them that they look absolutely beautiful. They may know you’re lying to them but either way it makes them feel much better about themselves. It let’s them have the strength to take on the day with a smile instead of a frown. It may not be the most convincing and long lasting lie but for a moment they’ll be…

To me the greatest birthday a child can have is when they turn 18. Now, who is this great for the child transforming into an adult or the parents watching their child leave the nest. When I turned 18 I starting working right away, I took a job at the local hog plant and I decided it was time for me to man up and get all my finances ready to move out on my own. Underneath all of my bravery I was scared to death when I moved out in to the real world on my own, I had not fully prepared myself in how to cook, how to properly wash my clothes and even how to shop for the basic groceries I was going to need around the house. The relationship with my parents changed when I moved out. I relied more on my Mother than ever before. I was not fully prepared so I would call my Dad when I had issues with the car. My perception of living on my home and entering adulthood completely changed when the reality of life hit me in the face.…
