Level preintermediateAimPresent perfect to express an
Level: Pre-intermediate
Aim:Present perfect to express an experience some time before now. E.g. I have been to Mexico. I have eaten Octopus etc. Target language: I have been/eaten etc., Have you ever...?
Time: 50 minutes
Assumptions: Students will have encountered the present perfect before so should be familiar with the form. Possible problems: Students might use the present perfect with past phrases, e.g. I have been to Mexico in 2003. I have eaten Octopus last year.

Lead-In: - 10 mins
I would put up a map of the world and name some countries and tell them where I am from,to get started. And start asking sts where are they from?/ I am from Canada, etc.I would ask pairs to discuss what they did on their last holidays. So they use past simple which they have been taught before. Then when we move on to the present perfect they will start thinking.... then I start asking them what countries have you been on holidays before? - to make it specific, sts answer with '' I have been to Italy'' and at this stage I would move onto the presentation.
Presentation: - 10 mins
By using a white board – I would write two different sentences, One is present perfect and the other just past tense for example,
I have visited Ireland
I had visited Ireland in 2012 – past phrases.
And I would discuss the differences/ form/ meaning.
I will teach one use or meaning of the verb in one lesson for example in one lesson I would teach the past simple for telling stories – he opened the door but nobody was there....
In another lesson I would teach the present perfect for events. – I have organised a party.
Practice – Controlled: - 15 mins
Teacher designed work sheet question and pick the write answer from two options, etc. Have you eaten there in that restaurant? (a) I had eaten in that restaurant.
(b) I have eaten in that restaurant.
Have you finished the project? (a) I hadn’t finished the project.
(b) I have finished the project.
Production – Freer: - 10

Obviously, I do not want to lesson to be too easy nor too difficult. I want to challenge students and allow students to have fun participating in the lesson. One of my goals is for students to connect learning targets to their prior knowledge and have students make new connections to better remember material. Mrs. Corcoran has done the ice cream survey math for once a year for the past few years, and she has found the students can use prior knowledge and connect to new experiences to be applied in other areas of learning. I asked Mrs. Corcoran how she would like me to format the worksheets for students to use when asking students what their preferred or favorite ice cream flavor is to make sure the worksheet can be understood for students who can and can’t read well. She said to have the worksheet to be a few columns, list student 1,2,3…., and tally which ice cream favor he or she prefers. The impact on student learning is having a worksheet be easily understood, decrease frustration and stress, and have student enjoy the lesson. Mrs. Corcoran and I will communicate next week to go over the…

Were students engaged in the lesson? How do you know? I used accessing prior knowledge to find out what students already know and from there I relate the students learning to something in my background to better understand the language used. As much as possible, I used visuals and PowerPoints to explain each of the new words. I modeled and demonstrated the hands-on activates with the use of visual aids and techniques in order for the students to be successful. I allowed for collaborative group work to engage students, and assessed the final work products and group presentations by using an observation check list, which provided me records of what the students were doing during the grouping…
