Level 3 Award IN Education and Training - Mark Kendrick
Unit 1 Understanding Roles Responsibilities and Relationships in Education and Training
Question 1
1.1 Main Role and responsibilities as a teacher/trainer in education and training
The main role of a teacher/trainer should be to teach in a way which engages learners and actively engage learning during every lesson irrespective of the environment. In my position as IT manager at Barnsley College there are roles and responsibilities that are set to facilitate personal and organisational goals the same can be said for teaching and learning. As a teacher/trainer I will need to be able to adapt my style of teaching by being a friend, counsellor, mentor to ensure that my learners are able to rely on me to meet their individual learning needs. To this end I have the role of assessor, most learners have different learning needs and it is my job to identify these needs as part of the teaching and learning cycle to ensure my students get the best experience of learning possible. I will need to have the skills to promote equality and diversity and inclusion in the classroom. Initial assessments will help me to identify my learners needs which could include poor hand writing, poor reading skills, or any disability that is a barrier to the individuals learning need, A diagnostic test will be carried out to identify individual learner needs and if any further support is required this will then form the root of the individual learning plan. By doing the initial and diagnostic tests this will enable me as the trainer to understand how to apply the different assessment methods to meet the needs of the individual student which in turn may increase the motivation of the student and give me the confidence to deliver the training. Assessing the learners needs skills and knowledge will help to identify any areas that may need to be referred or where advice and guidance can be given to support learners to achieve.

When making an assessment we need to pull on a number of skills to ensuring that the correct level of learning has been conducted by the trainer and that the learner has under stood the information given. The assessor has to be confident that the learner is also able to recall the information therefore giving them the skill set to conduct the role they are undertaking. The trained person should then leave the course with the new understanding and have thoughts on how they can apply the skills and improve in some cases the tasks that they will now undertake with their new knowledge.…

The main function of an assessment is to ascertain if learning has taken place and that the learner has obtained the required knowledge, skills and understanding. Assessment needs to be a constant process which should take place every time you see the learner, either by watching what they are doing, asking questions or carrying out short coaching or training sessions. It should also focus on improving, re-enforcing learning and measuring achievement showing how the learner is developing and areas they need to improve on. Assessment can be formal which is when you use assessments, assignments, tests and workplace observation to assess learning and informal which can be by asking a few questions.…

Throughout the module TS1301 a trainee teacher experiences a wide range of emotions that change their outlook on the way they teach. These emotions range from the sublime to almost rock bottom, and as with everything in life it is individual and at that moment be it at the top or bottom no one has experienced this feeling before. Throughout the module you are required to observe teachers in their lessons, this gives the trainee teacher a valuable insight into how things should be done, a lesson learnt during an observation was to have a concurrent activity in place for those learners who are easily bored and work quickly. Other aspects of the module include written assignments on various subjects, one of those subjects is the roles and responsibilities of the teacher, in this assignment the trainee teacher researches the vast amount of roles to be undertaken by the trainee teacher and quickly becomes an eye opener into the world of education, the sheer quantity of roles can be overwhelming to some trainees and this is closely followed by the responsibilities that go with these roles. ‘’ Traditionally the role of the teacher has been as purveyor of information’’ (Reece and walker 2003 p3) this is simply no longer the case and the trainee teacher needs to understand the needs of each individual learner, and cater for the group as individuals not as a class. By undertaking this module the trainee teacher should take some of the knowledge and adapt their lessons accordingly, always keeping the emphasis on the learners getting as much out of the session as possible. Unfortunately with emotions running so high it’s inevitable that a clash of personalities will occur at some point, when a student fails an assessment they may become angry and that anger will undoubtedly end up at the trainee teacher’s door, at this point they may even be doubting themselves but it is important that as a trainee teacher they remain calm and objective, but above all…

It is essential that ground rules should be laid out from the outset of every new course with the learners. These ground rules are the basic normal operating procedures that are in place from session to session, that the learners adhere to. For a tutor these ground rules include; the greeting and welcoming of the learners, basic health and safety aspects i.e. fire procedures and other emergency procedures, where clothing and accessories are to be kept. Also, mobile phones and other communication tools are to be switched off or on vibrate, no food substances or hot beverages are to be consumed in session time (unless otherwise agreed i.e. in the case of a medical condition such as Diabetes). Duration and frequency of breaks and acceptable levels of comfort breaks during session time are to be agreed and adhered to also. All students will abide by the non-smoking policies of the facility, and if desired use the designated area for smoking, and of course what the course syllabus and content entails, also encompassing what the assessment details/procedures will be and at what stages through the term time or session duration. Also, an explanation of the course certification and validation will be given. I think one of the best ways to install and reinforce some of these ground rules is to get the learners themselves involved, especially when it comes to agreed and acceptable time limits for lateness, either at session start time or after break times. It should also be noted that learners should encourage one another and to allow everyone to have a voice and to be heard.…

‘The role and responsibility of the teacher is a complex one’ cited (Wilson, 2008, p. 4) I agree to this as they are hard to define and all roles and responsibilities are different depending on which subject you are teaching and the age of the learners. However my main role is to ensure learners gain their qualifications from the way in which I deliver the subject. I must take in to consideration the different learning styles and levels of the learners. ‘Teaching and learning should be a structured process’ cited by (Wilson, Practical Teaching a Guide to PTLLS & DTLLS, 2008, p. 15) Which leads to the teaching and learning cycle and the first stage that I will address is identifying the needs of the learners. To find out how I would do this in my area of teaching, I discussed with my mentor how the initial assessment process is carried out and to begin it involves interviewing each of the learners to discuss their current skills and experiences to ensure they are applying for the correct course then once enrolled on to the course all the full time students must then complete a diagnostic test, which will give results containing information regarding their key skills level and individual learning styles. I will use (flemings, 2005)four styles of learning to discover this which is appropriate for my teaching subject. This will help me identify any learning barriers and prepare individual learning plans for students who may need extra support or training, which will give them their own individual targets to help me plan a lesson. To do this I will firstly identify what the topic is about and plan my resources and materials, ensuring I complete any risk assessments beforehand if using certain equipment. My individual learning plans will help me use differentiation methods to suit all learner’s levels and abilities, and ensuring I adapt to all strengths and weaknesses of each student, However at the end of a lesson I will re cap with the students and…

My role involves teaching young apprentices from the ages 17 to 25 within a predetermined college style environment, the students that I teach are interviewed, processed, and accepted on the course via the recruitment section of my department. I have made a point of becoming involved with my colleagues and discussing individuals on a one by one basis, I discuss the process, grades and how applicants have done in functional skills. I question the recruiters on any additional learning needs they may have highlighted, or any concerns they may have I will then record this information for my own use. When I am within the classroom environment I take care to be alert to any signals that may indicate any additional learning needs that may have been missed by the recruitment process or by my discussions with the recruiters. Indicators could be low marks in mock tests, disruptive or distractive behaviour, straining to see. If additional learning needs are highlighted I will endeavour to find any resources available to meet these needs such as the inspiration software to help with projects, I will also signpost any agencies to get any outside help if I feel that I cannot meet there needs, for example the British Dyslexia Association. I always make sure that a student has my total support and understanding also that they do not feel like they are a special case, I feel that it is important for the student to have trust in me and feel that I am approachable. Once the induction process is started my role is to inform the students of the course syllabus I will cover the health and safety aspect and explain the emergency procedures, I will also explain my role and what will be expected of the students. Each member of the team will do a short presentation explaining their roles and responsibilities, and questions from the students will be welcomed throughout. I will normally…
