10th Grade Lin Zexu, the Chinese imperial commissioner appealed to Queen Victoria to stop the sale/smuggling of opium into China. He showed that if she would not let citizens of her country use it due to its harmful consequences, then why is she letting them sell it to other people in foreign countries who will suffer opium’s consequences just as much. Lin argues that China only exports products beneficial to other countries. He also hinted that they would cut off the sale of rhubarb to Britain. His arguments were ineffective, as the British responded by telling him that if the Chinese did not want it then they did not have to buy it.
