Let Kids Play Football Bennet Omalu Analysis
Football, like every sport has its risks, but so the players should be able to make their own decisions when it comes to whether or not they play. To most people football is just a game where people throw a ball and tackle each other, but to certain families and people it is more than just a game. It is a way of a life and there is more to risk out on that field than just winning or losing. There are repercussions if we were to cut out the game, football players and others gain from the game, and it brings people and communities together in unimaginable ways. Even though the numbers are dropping, football remains the most popular boys sport. 1.084 million boys and around 1,500 girls all play youth football, so if we were to cut the program where would all of these kids go. After reading the article “Would I Let My Son Play Football?” by Scott Fujita, I would definitely let my child play the sport ,despite the fact that the sport has many negative side effects. What is really hypocritical to me is when Scott states “No.” (Fujita 2), when he was asked if he would let his son play football. I disagree with what he said because he played football his whole life. How is it possible that he loves the sport, but would not allow his child to play? One quote I do agree with is when he said “..now I actually get paid to talk about football on television. Imagine the hypocrisy”(Fujita 4). I agree with the quote because it is ironic to me how he was an NFL player and loved the sport, but is now talking down on it and realises…

However, this is no utopia and some of our athletes are not law abiding citizens; with a few of them having multiple run-ins with the law. Being a media crazed era, we are seeing more athletes have run-ins with the law, particularly the National Basketball Association, Major League Baseball, and the National Football League. The first reason why football should be banned is, injuries to the head can have long term effects. “If someone gets hit too hard in the head, they can get permanent brain damage.”(Jennifer Shotz, scholastic scope) This is important, because permanent brain damage can and will change the entire course of a person’s life. They might not ever be able to drive. Or, they might never be able to move out of their parents’ house, because of the brain damage they got as a kid from playing football. Also, “getting hit in the head can result in memory loss, aggression, dizziness, headaches, blurry vision, and other lifelong damages”.(Maureen Salamon, webmd.com) obviously, football is way too risky to play.
