Lester B Pearson
The Legendary Canadian
Many great people and many great things shape history to what it is today. An example would be Adolf Hitler. Hitler was a great man but that does not mean what he did was essentially a great thing. Hitler helped in shaping the world’s history by causing World War 2. He was trying to shape the future as well because he wanted Germans to be the superior race. However there are good people who did good things to shape history. One specific person that comes to mind is Lester Bowles Pearson. He did not shape the world’s history but he did shape Canada’s history; he made Canada to what it is today, he introduced Universal Medicare to all Canadians, and he created the United Nations peacekeeping force.

To begin, Lester B. Pearson helped make Canada. He made it to what it is to this day, he is the Prime Minister “who gave Canada the identity that we have today” (thegauntlet.ca). One of the things he did was give Canada its flag. Pearson went to the House of Commons and informed them that the Canadian government wanted to adopt a new national flag and change it from the Union Jack. He made it a priority that Canada gets a new flag. Pearson fought long to get Canada a new flag, it was a very “heated debate over the issue, all through tactful negotiation and bargaining” (thegauntlet.ca). If he did not become Prime Minister there would have been a good chance that we would still have the Union Jack as our flag. Secondly, he created Canada’s Pension plan. This plan to help those who have retired; he made it so that all that are retired can get the money they deserve. In addition he also made the Auto Pact or otherwise called the Canada-United States Automotive Products Agreement. This is a very important trade agreement between the two countries. This agreement removed all tariffs on cars, trucks, buses, tires and all automotive parts. The auto pact is very important to Canadians and Americans as it is meant, “to secure the foundations for Canadian

World War 1, World War 2 and the Cold War, Canada has always been very dependent upon other countries socially, economically and politically through tough situations. In the case of the FTA,Canada had made the decision for the long run and the decision to join was not particularly during a tough time, but sadly resulting in one for many. The decision to negotiate a FreeTrade Agreement with the United States seemed good at the time; Wider access to a variety of goods and services, new employment opportunities and the removal of trade tarriffs. Critics had stated their opinions solely based on the unemployment that the FTA (Free Trade Agreement) had created. Supporters had their opinion on the social, economic and political impact for Canada. Even though the increase of unemployment has risen ever since the FTA was signed, it has impacted Canada positively because we're gaining stronger ties with the US and creating better potential opportunities for Canadian businesses and people.…

Following King’s retirement in 1948, Louis St. Laurent became Prime Minister of Canada and took a very different position on foreign policy. Laurent stated that he saw Canada as a “power of the middle rank” and wanted them to take a larger part in social, military and economic international affairs. In 1956 Lester B. Pearson, Canada’s Secretary of State for External Affairs, brought forward Laurent’s views on a U.N. military force in the form of the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF), or peacekeeping. The following year Pearson won the Nobel Peace Prize for his contribution in the Suez crisis and for finding a way out of international crisis. One writer described it as “A Nobel Prize for Canada” and it became the catalyst for Canadian…

This was true as Canada and Russia would again play each other again 2 years later in the 1974 summit series. “…History is created by people and the role of the individual cannot be denied, even though it needs to be seen in a historical context. While there are limits to the role played by individuals, might the part they play in critical circumstances be decisive in the chain of causality?” Pertaining to this ‘Great Man Theory’ it can be said that Franklin Delano Roosevelt upheld his victorious and highly regarded government through means of social, economic and political reforms, as well as ambitious personal and strategic decisions that have successfully remained influential to American society today and maintained his image as a prominent historic leader.…

The proposed Canada-U.S.trade agreement had been very controversial and divisive in Canada, and the 1988 Canadian election was fought almost exclusively on that issue. In that election, more Canadians voted for anti-free trade parties (the Liberals and the New Democrats) but the split caused more seats in parliament to be won by the pro-free trade Progressive Conservatives (PCs). Mulroney and the PCs had a parliamentary majority and were easily able to pass the Canada-US FTA and NAFTA bills. However, Mulroney himself had become deeply unpopular and resigned on June 25, 1993. He was replaced as Conservative leader and prime minister by…
