Lesson Plan for Preschool
Class: Head Start or Pre-K Skill Level: 3 or 4 years old Length of Lesson: 45 minutes

Primary Theme: Fire safety

I would have the children to seat in the circle area to listen while I read “Stop Drop and Roll” (A Book about Fire Safety) by Margery Cuyler, Arthur Howard (Illustrator). I would show them the pictures as I read to them, and I would ask them questions to see if they comprehended anything from the book. And I would allow their free comments of their perception as I read the book. Then for music and movement, we would sing, “Stop, drop and roll!” As we sing the song, I would have the children to act out the song for movement, by having them to pretend that they are on fire, and do as the song says, “Stop, Drop and Roll” as they would be putting their selves out, if they were on fire. For the art, I would let them make a Firefighter's Hat. The materials needed for the art would be: Pattern for Front of Hat; Pattern for Back of Hat; Tacky Glue; 1 Sheet Red Craft Foam; Scrap of White Craft Foam; Scrap of Black Craft Foam. Instructions: Print patterns. Piece front and back together at the dotted line. Staple inside your cutting lines onto red foam. Cut out. Cut the shield out of white. Cut out black numbers. Glue together as shown in photo above. You have the finished product a Firefighter's

I would do an activity like this after checking for prior knowledge (a story about zoo animals or a field trip to the zoo). In addition to open-ended questions and guessing games, I play the “Memory game.” First we look at all the pictures (starting with about twenty cards or ten mates). Then we place the cards face down and I model by picking up a card and turning it over. Then I turn over another and then the first child follows what I modeled. The children really enjoy this game. Their memory starts kicking in once I turn over quite a few…

I went to observe the preschoolers with Dr. Whitcomb and another student and also got to observe her teaching the children in class. Dr. Whitcomb used activities that involved movement, instrument exploration and call and response to foster basic music competence. Activities like Shake Your Egg were chosen to expose the children to music and get them to do things along with the song. I taught Jack Be Nimble so that the children could get exposure to a meter other than common time. Walk and Stop and Gallop were also a few of the other lessons that were taught to teach things like walking to a steady beat or improvising different movements to songs.…

When planning lessons or group activities, I take the aim into consideration and base everything around that. For example if I were to deliver a lesson on numbers up to ten for a group of children who could confidently count up to 8 then I would firstly look at what resources I could use to educate them on their numbers up to ten. I would then ask my colleagues what activities/resources they found that best helped in similar situations. For children to learn it is important that they are enjoying any activities in place it opens up their minds and they are keen to learn new things. I would then plan where I would take the lesson; I find the more active a lesson is the more the children relish it. Because of the age the children are full of energy and it’s good to use it in a positive and safe way. So as long as the weather permits, I would plan the activity on the playground, if not then the hall. I would use bright resources, as there’s more of a chance of the children remembering them. It is important to choose the right resources that will teach the children exactly what you need. Taking into account that the children need help learning their numbers from 8-10 that is what ill be doing. My activity will be based on that the children can count from 0-8 without a problem, its getting up to 10 then they are struggling with.…

In addition to this I think it would be important for myself to get involved with playing one of the instruments and to model how to use it correctly as children” copy “ what they see. Then they will know how to play an instrument the correct and safe way. I, in turn, would then get a better connection with the children during that lesson, it would also send out a positive message to the class as it would show that we could all join in for a fun, but still effective lesson together which would not only give us a lesson to look forward too but also give us a better understanding of what type of learning methods we can use for other lessons, for example, the…
