Students’ Prior Experience: It is a review lesson for Anna, but a new experience for the other two students Joe and Liz

Objective: Students will be able to identify healthy foods and write the names of some fruits and vegetables by the end of the lesson

Materials/Resources: Charts, drawing board, real fruits and vegetables, PowerPoint presentation.

Use of Technology: Technology will be used more towards the end of the lesson in doing the analysis of what each student has learned. The PowerPoint will have some interesting questions with attractive audio and visual aids to test the student’s learning.

Anticipatory Set/ Introduction: Students will be shown some images of fruits and vegetable initially; if they are unable to identify then a real fruit/vegetable will be shown to them. This will help in understanding if they are actually unaware of the fruit or have challenge in interpreting its image.

Lesson Sequence: The initial work is to estimate the prior knowledge of the students. For that, they will be shown the images and then some real fruits and vegetables. They will then be told the names, pronunciation and spelling of their names. Some information like the properties of the fruit will also be told to them. This would be followed by some group activities like drawing the images, taste testing etc. Finally the assessment will be done by an attractive PowerPoint that will access each student’s understanding.

Before I started, I read Samuel Scudder’s essay “Learning to See” where he talks about having to do a similar type of assignment but with a fish. With this in mind, I chose an apple from my bowl of fruit and prepared for what I thought would be a tedious sixty minutes.…

It was obvious that Ms. Brown had created a plan for this lesson by observing the progression of the skills that were being taught and that they were presented in a logical order that aided student comprehension. Both the students and the teacher were familiar with the skills and the delivery. She also posts lesson plans online. Objectives and expectations of the lesson were communicated to the students on a special place on the board, at the front of the class with essential questions and " I can" statements. Ms. Brown was able to gain the students' attention for the lesson with a hook type activity. It was an engaging question for the student to answer that was related to the topic. Students worked independently, in pairs and in groups and read a selection either by themselves or with another student. The material was then presented in a graphic organizer by the teacher with illustrations and relevant examples provided by the students. They also read the selection (either our loud to a partner or to themselves) and then the material was displayed in the form of a graphic organizer for the visual learners. Ms. Brown used PowerPoint to present the material.…
