CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study
Cosplay is the short term used for the phrase “costume play”. It is an activity which requires every participant to wear costumesand accessories to represent a specific character or idea from a work of fiction. In cosplaying, it is not unusual to see genders switched because some are known for choosing characters to be portrayed based on the attractiveness of their costume and even on how revealing it was. The characters chosen to be cosplayed are often based on manga’s, anime, comic books, video games and even films. (“Definition of Cosplay”, n.d.)
Cosplay did not really start in Japan as most us knew and it is not an original concept of the Japanese. It is true that the actual word “cosplay” was coined by a Japanese reporter named Nov Takahashi when he was assigned to report the happenings on the 1984 WorldCon in Los Angeles, California. Japanese involvement in the creation of the hobby is just because of Nov Takahashi’s coinage on the word “cosplay” which he uses to describe what he see and observe at the WorldCon.
It is said that the first documented hall costume was worn by Forry Ackerman during the 1939 WorldCon in New York. His first costume design was an original “space military” style uniform. The early WorlCons and other small sci-fi conventions were primarily attended by young men only. Women are either not admitted or often seen at sci-fi

In ariticale “All Clothing Is Costume” Laia Carcia (2015) argues that with the development of high fashion growth the line between clothing and costume is blurred and we all wear costume every day. In her article, she gave different example to support her idea. For example, people who wear a type of costume and uniforms in their daily life, such as school uniforms, nurse’s scrubs, airline attendant outfits and business suit. If these clothes can dress as a profession for Halloween, the every-day wear counts as a costume. In a word, the author think the clothing is costume.…

Participants simply needed to dress appropriately for the specific genre. It wasn’t until 1984 that the term “cosplay” was invented when Nobuyuki Takahashi, a Japanese reporter, combined the words ‘costume’ and ‘play’ after a trip to WorldCom in Los Angeles (YsabelGo). Nowadays it is not unusual to see cosplayers at conventions around the world taking on a complete character role either of the same sex or opposite sex.…

Using fashion to differentiate between femininity and masculinity is as basic a function as its purpose of coverage or protection. Hustvedt’s example of the wardrobe and lack of hair of the Buddhist monks and nuns, prove how important fashion is in defining gender. “Had they all stripped naked and stood together, the difference between them would have been ridiculously small, would have been no more nor less than what the difference truly is – genital variation and a few secondary sexual characteristics in the chest and hips” (Hustvedt 446). A corset is a great article of clothing to use as an example of how fashion accentuates gender. It creates an hour glass figure which emphasizes a women’s bust and hips. “The corset helped to create a notion of femininity, and the lines it produced have gone in and out of fashion ever since” (Hustvedt 448).…

Dressing up for the Carnival is a short story by Carol Shields. The message communicated by the author was that in everyday life, people tend to conceal their genuine personality by exhibiting an illusion of the persona that they wish to be viewed as by their surrounding society. In this particular case the characters use physical props as their “costume”. Some characters use these props as a costume because they provide a sense of comfort. A character from this story would be X. X is an anonymous middle aged citizen. His prop is his wife’s lace-trimmed nightgown. He is careful to only wear this when no one is home, and usually after the sun goes down so that nobody would be able to see him. The nightgown provides him with comfort because he…
