In Leslie Savan’s essay “What’s Black, Then White, and Said All Over?”, Savan writes about the importance of African American vernacular in the United States today. Black English has ultimately changed society with new terms and slangs. For instance, such slangs as “yo, what’s hanging, chill out, hook up, ain’t, ight ” and many more, have been adapted in day-to-day conversations, songs, magazines, and television causing a tremendous change in marketing. Although black slang has positively affected many companies by reaching out to young audiences through advertisements, not every commercial was pleasing to the crowd. The website www.wwnorton.com mentions a certain example. A man by the name of Sylvester Brown Jr. from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, talks about a certain commercial he saw on television a few years back that was trying to reach out to the African American audience. When Brown saw a car commercial showing a group of young blacks dancing to the “Electric Slide” while a car drove by, he recalled asking himself “What does the Electric Slide have to do with cars?”. Commercials such as these seem to draw consumers away instead of reeling them in. Another case has been with the new 2010 Toyota commercial. On the website www.theurbandaily.com , writers angrily talk about how many viewers were offended by the new Toyota rap commercial and how it was mocking black slang. To many people in the audience, the commercial seemed to have “killed” the term “Swagger”. Many advertisers do not seem to take in consideration that certain approaches using black slang can be condescending and disrespectful to African Americans, causing their company to lose clients. Throughout Savan’s essay, she constantly refers back to the importance of the African American vernacular and how it has exceedingly caused a positive change in marketing, but what Savan forgets to mention is that not all media-related advertisements using black slang have had…

In Michelle Obama’s speech “Remarks to the NAACP National Convention,” she laments that childhood obesity is a serious issue in America today, back when she was young children were always out playing and being active, nowadays children would rather sit inside and play video games then do anything else. Since most children are seldom most of the time and spend hours upon hours watching television “every extra hour of TV they watch is associated with the consumption of an additional 167 calories.” (423). Children aren’t just becoming lazier, they’re actually becoming more and more unhealthy as time goes on developing “diabetes and cancer, heart disease, asthma.” (420). In an effort to try and help fix childhood obesity Obama launched the “Let’s Move” campaign, which even features commercials on Disney Channel showing the Disney celebrities outside playing some kind of physical activity. The four main points to this campaign are; The first one consists of giving parents knowledge to give their children healthy food not fast food. The second point states that the government is attempting to replace fatty foods in schools with healthier options, regardless of how the children will feel about it. The third part of the campaign is just trying to show children that being active actually is fun, it doesn’t just have to be challenging. The final point Obamas’ campaign states is that all families no matter what their income is, wealthy or struggling, should have the ability to get fresh and healthy food without breaking the bank.…

In the novel, Hope Leslie, Catherine Maria Sedgwick uses personal analysis as well as historical information to create an uncannily realistic tale of romance, racial prejudice and religion. Throughout the book, Sedgwick emphasizes relations between the Native American peoples and the European Americans living in Massachusetts in the 1640’s. She is able to do this specifically with the characters of Magawisca, the Native American slave with the will of a lioness, Everell Fletcher, the handsome much wanted white male protagonist, Hope Leslie, a strong headed young woman who symbolizes modernism in the piece and Esther Downing, Hope Leslie’s literary foil. Through the relationships between Everell and each of the three female protagonists, Magawisca, Esther and Hope, Sedgwick stresses that the relations between Native Americans and Americans will never be fully amiable due to religious, societal, natural influences.…
