Lentil as Anything
Introduction:
There is a common business saying that “follow your passion and success will follow you”. Shanaka Fernando is a visionary businessman who has a passion for helping people. He decided to open a restaurant where customer would decide how much to pay for their meals and extra donations would fund another customer’s meal who normally could not afford. He opened Lentil as Anything nine years ago, which are now a chain of vegetarian restaurants across Melbourne. Lentil as Anything or Lentil for short, also believes in assisting their employees by sponsoring some of them get their Australian visa, and management have extended this culture by hiring people who are struggling to find employment.
However, despite Shanaka’s and his team’s passion, they have failed to run an efficient and successful organisation. Throughout the day-to-day operation of the organisation, poor management and ‘no-structure’ culture has contributed to the struggles within Lentil’s operation. This essay will discuss the mismanagement in the organisation and suggests what managers can do to turn it into a successful firm. First discussion is regarding no quality control for their products and services. Quality plays a significant role on both products and services that meet or exceed customer 's expectations. Secondly, it will discuss the issue regarding Lentil’s operation is running without any form of financial management in place. Financial management is crucial with planning, controlling and effective utilization of cash flow. Third, it will look at the lack of managing the organisation’s human resources such as no recruitment process when taking on new employees, no training program for their staff, no communication process, which have all led to poor team morale and low employee retention. This essay will critique each of these issues then provide suggestions for Lentil’s managers in order to become a more effective and successful organisation.

From the case, no audit or analysis was undertaken to ascertain whether the company needed a quality control unit. This is an example of how the company is increasing its operating costs which has contributed to its current liquidity challenges. Ms. Pundir is biased toward addressing shareholders’ needs rather than pursue what is good for business survival. It is reported that the company had previously declared high dividend payments to its shareholders because Pundir believed that it was risky to leave excess funds to the company. Similarly the company does not value its employees, the company prefers hire people in high season, and firing them in low seasons.…

    Mumbai Dabbawalla

The famous Mumbai Dabbawalas were at the MET League of Colleges a few days ago. They made the same presentation they had delivered at Harvard Business School. At an interesting and interactive session they spoke about the organisational structure, working style, and delivery systems of their organisation – the Nutan Mumbai Tiffin Box Supplier's Association – to a packed weekend gathering of METizens. A lot has already been said about the supply chain management systems used by the Mumbai Dabbawalas. They have received global applause and are featured as case studies in B School books. However, what I took home was not just management fundas but lessons that I will cherish all my life. Since these lessons impacted me greatly, I felt that I must share my learnings with you. Therefore I decided to write this letter. Apart from career-making tips, I learnt life-changing tips on honesty, commitment, stress management, humility, discipline, and HR and time management. During the various challenges in life, I am sure that the values followed by the dabbawalas will give you strength to rise above the toughest odds. The lessons I learnt are: Utmost dependence on Human Capital The most vital link in this chain of food delivery is human capital. The procedures could have been laid down over a century ago, but it is the implementation of the procedures that makes the system work. The Mumbai dabbawalas propagate that correct amount of human dependence can yield amazing results. Honesty and Integrity The threads of integrity and honesty hold the dabbas together. Though it is lunchtime for dabbawalas also, the aroma wafting from the dabbas has never tempted them. Overcoming a basic instinct like hunger is possible only because of strong roots in a culture that encourages truthfulness and integrity. Discipline and Time Management The dabbawalas operate on the…

It is true that failures pave way for triumphs in life. No man is known to have been completely successful in his life without failure having guided him. In April 2009, I had to experience the closure of Brand Box, a marketing project that I had launched with two partners. Scarcity of funds forced us to give up on our passion. While I was forced to revert back to my old profession of legal consultancy, I realized through a long period of alienation with my consulting job that I could never be “great” at what I do because of lacking enough passion for consultancy. Through a rigorous process of self reflection, I stumbled upon the precious truth that my heart was not in my consultancy job. I, however, decided to rise above this alienation and reconcile my heart with my mind to achieve equilibrium in my life. I came up with an idea of launching Pakistan’s first New York-style stone baked oven pizzeria. Initially, I was under-equipped to be in a food business as I had little information about the logistics. In order to make up for that, I worked closely with chefs and food experts for 6 months until Stone Baked Pizza was launched on the 1st of September 2011. I can proudly declare that the restaurant currently has revenue of around PKR 0.5 million per month. I would not just gauge this achievement in terms of monetary rewards as much as the satisfaction of being able to rise up from a deep-seated sense of alienation with my own self, which is priceless. Also, I realize that the actualization of my individuality rested upon this venture and I derive…
