Personal Leisure Profile

Personal Philosophy My personal philosophy towards life and leisure is founded in the belief that one should seek out those moments, events, people and attitudes that bring happiness to one’s life. I believe in spending time with the ones you love and the ones who love you in return as it is these people who help shape your reality, attitudes and life in turn. Since the truth is that no one cares if you are miserable except yourself, I make sure to surround myself with people who enrich my life; those who uplift me and help bring me higher and strive to better myself. I believe it is important to take time to do activities that one loves doing. It doesn’t matter whether these activities are enjoyed alone, with friends or with family, just getting out and doing these activities is beneficial to one’s state of being. When a person takes time to do those things they love, a contentedness results and regardless of any hurt, pain, stress or struggles, they are able to enjoy themselves in that moment. I believe attitude contributes a lot to one’s state of mind and also one’s physical being. All of my life experiences, good and bad alike, have taught me a lot and have helped me grow into the person I am today. I try to remain positive no matter what situation I find myself in. A major driving force in my life is my family. I am a firm believer that one of the most important aspects in life is family. I have a two year old daughter who has changed my life in a positive

Can happiness be found in everyday life? In the articles, “The Pursuit of Happiness,” “Just for the Joy of it,” and “Get out of the Groove,” each author suggests different ways that people may acquire happiness. People are constantly trying to find happiness in some aspect of their lives. For some, it may be easy for them to feel happy, but for others, it may be a continuous difficulty. Not everyone will experience happiness equally, because no person is identical to another. Everyone is different, meaning that it is reasonable to suggest that they encounter different methods for acquiring happiness. Some ways that the authors agree or disagree that happiness may be pursued include how much people are willing to do to be happy, discovering natural tendencies in humans, and focusing on the simple things in life.…

The activities performed for leisure are divided into two categories; passive leisure time and active leisure time. The department of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (2013) defines passive leisure time as the time spent on rudimentary activities that require minimal mental and physical exertion. In contrast, active leisure time is the time spent on leisurely activities that require the use of physical or mental abilities such as playing sports or socializing. For the purpose of clarity, the term active leisure time will be referred to as recreation time in this paper as both terms encompasses similar meanings. From Sunday, January 6th to Saturday, January 12th, a large portion of my time was spent sleeping, attending classes or studying. On average, roughly eighteen hours per day were spent performing these activities this particular week. Leisure time occupied roughly twenty-two hours of the week with an average of three hours per day. This time map indicates that I am fortunate enough to have ample time for relaxation and leisure every day of the week. Similarly, time for recreational and physical activities occupied seventeen hours of the week with an average of two and a half hours per day. The Public Health Agency of Canada (2012) suggests that adults aged from eighteen to sixty-four years old should be performing moderate to intense activities at least two and a half hours per week to achieve health benefits. According to the time map, two and a half hours were spent every single day being moderately to rigorously active, indicating that I have a fairly active lifestyle.…

I believe that the most important part of life is to be happy. In the book The Art of Happiness at Work the author points out the fact the Dalai Lama has said before “that the purpose of life is happiness” (16). Growing up I was always taught by my mother that you have a choice to be happy or sad and that you can make this choice with your attitude towards any situation. My mother also taught me that if I felt as though there was a wrong in the world that I should fit for what I believe is right. I found at the beginning of The Art of Happiness at Work that the Dalai Lama had similar beliefs to ones that my mother instilled in me(19). Another topic that is tackled in this book is the topic of boredom from work being too easy. The author Howard C. Cutler discusses how to strike a balance between challenge and boredom. Yet another interesting topic is the…

Aristotle defines leisure as “a state of being in which activity is performed for its own sake or as its own end” (Grazia p.13). The Greeks came up with the concept of leisure. They believed that a state could not flourish without leisure. Aristotle says, “The life of leisure was the only life fit for a Greek”(pg.19). The Greeks found leisure in ways such as music and contemplation. They believed that music gave way to other activities such as poetry, dance, and gymnastics.…

The “Pleasant Life” is living your life with as much pleasure and positivity as possible and using your skills to increase your happiness (Tiller 2012). However, there are shortcomings to the “pleasant life” which are that people tend to get bored of the activities that make them happy and that is lacks flexibility. Seligman’s research has contributed to the field of positive psychology by helping people acquire the skills to be able to handle life in a more positive way. According to Seligman, there are three components of happiness: 1) pleasure, 2) engagement with one’s family, work, romance, and 3) meaning (Wallis 2005). Each type of happiness is connected to positive emotions with a sequence from gratification to strengths to purpose.…

My previous life style was completely different from the current one. After classes I used to go to some entertaining places with my friends like: playing football in stadiums, game clubs etc. Sometimes I just wasted my time in front of TV. In holidays, I would go to sightseeing sites like rivers, mountains. We enjoyed nature’s beauty. Every day passed interestingly. Without any doubt, I can say those days were golden days of my life. On the contrary, nowadays I try to spend each day wisely. I make plan of my daily routine, and sometimes it seems that I followed a specific procedure of every week. More entertaining time lasts in my university. After classes, I go to my job, and this also requires responsibility and special preparation. The main difference is that I cannot spend my whole day just for nothing or for relaxing.…
