Throughout the world legalizing prostitution has created many controversial debates on how this act can affect the society globally and locally. Prostitution is the act of exchanging sexual acts for some form of payment and income. Prostitution does not only effect the women and men participating in these sexual acts. It also effects the friends and family of each partner. It is legal in some countries, such as Columbia and Chile, but it is illegal in every state in the United States, except some parts of Nevada. Legalizing prostitution not only increases the chances of illness and sexually transmitted diseases, but it allows more women to easily to consider prostitution as opposed to finding a real job. Most religions don’t condone of fornication because of their culture aims to support a nuclear family. Also people who fornicate are looked as being lustful and selfish. In most religious beliefs the body of one is considered their temple. “Christianity prohibited all sexual acts, except sex within marriage, and even then, it was only permitted for the purpose of child conception. Prostitution was an outlet that men could use to satisfy their sexual urges” (Carrasquillo 701). It should be taken care of, cleansed, and respected. Those against legalizing prostitution believe that by legalizing it, we, as a country, are dignifying and professionalizing the women in prostitution. (Raymond) In the society we live in today people look and go off of one’s first impression. The face or cover of prostitution on a woman will be looked upon as being insecure of their body image and personality. This ideal is commonly disapproved by many people who have higher family values and believe that there are other ways for women to gain money in the community. There are a million other possibilities and ways that a woman can get money without giving their bodies up for income. Sexually abused women are more likely to become prostitutes because they feel exposed and lose their self respect and feel used. It mentally degrades them by stealing away their innocence.
