Legalization of Marijuana: A hot topic

The legalization of marijuana for recreational usage could may be a new trend in America but the Federal government will likely oppose usage through the end of time. The Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) stance is that marijuana is an illegal drug and that using this drug whether for medicinal or recreational purposes is illegal. I chose this topic to research because of awareness bright to light prior to the recent elections. Until researching this topic, I was unaware that marijuana usage is legal in some states and that other states were pushing legislation to get similar passage in their states. My mission here is to research this topic by means of academic sources as well as through other public sources to attempt to determine biases in information, usefulness and content, and critical thinking skills. In the recent national election, legalization of marijuana usage for recreational purposes was on the ballots of three states. Those states were Oregon, Washington, and Colorado. The voters of Washington and Colorado were able to out-vote those opposed and the passage of this law was made loud and clear by citizens of those states. The states of Massachusetts and Arkansas were pushing to pass a noted law that would legalize marijuana for medical usage on the same November 6 ballots. The voters of Massachusetts were able to get the law passed but those in Arkansas were not. Today there are 19 of the 50 states in the U.S that have passed laws to legalize marijuana usage in one form or another. Refer to Exhibit 1 for a list of the 19 states. There are four states with pending legislation to legalize marijuana. Those states are Illinois, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. This information is according to a website that I found while during research called ProCon.org. ProCon.org is a 501c3 nonprofit

Marijuana advocates scored major victories at the voting block during the November elections. Voters approved ballot measures in Colorado and Washington that reversed federal law to legalize the drug’s recreational use. The victories could be short lived as the federal government ponders its response, but there has been a notable change in public sentiment on the subject. It is now conceivable that marijuana could be legalized throughout more of the country as 22 states are currently considering legislation to either legalize consumption and sale of marijuana or decriminalize minor possession offenses.…

Several topics in modern day society cause controversy, but one topic that out ranks them all is the legalization of marijuana. The main argument is whether not marijuana should be treated the same as already legalized drugs, such as tobacco and alcohol. Many Americans use marijuana illegally; the people using the drug range from the age of teens to even adults in their eighties. Marijuana is considered by most, especially in legal terms, as a dangerous drug. Although the drug is seen as such, many still continue to use it and argue it should be legalized for several reasons. Both citizens and government officials alike debate this topic. To successfully develop and argument for the legalization of marijuana the topic must be defined, the history of the topic must be unveiled, an argument must be made, and a good solution should be proposed. Yes, both sides of the argument both have well supported positions, but marijuana should be legalized by the United States government because the facts supporting legalization far outweigh the arguments keeping the drug as it is.…

This article looks at legalizing medical marijuana in the 44 states that still have it illegal. It covers the drug’s use and why there is so much debate surrounding its use. The main reason why marijuana is still illegal in so many states is because the government doesn’t want people who don’t have medical use for it to abuse the substance. "Marijuana And The Controlled Substances Act." Congressional Digest 93.8 (2014): 2-6. Academic Search Premier. Web. 5 Nov. 2014. In that case it prevents people who have serious health problems to access the medical marijuana. The statistics and citations I have for this essay will help strengthen my essay because all the information I will be giving is explaining why the drug is still illegal in 44 states for medical use.…

Marijuana is the most commonly used illegal substance in United States and in many other countries; this is a statement that seems to be in each article that is written about the legalization of marijuana. This is a subject that has been up for debate for quite a few years now. There are many people who support the legalization of this drug and are strongly convinced that marijuana is not a drug in which one should be punished for, but rather a drug that should not be frowned upon and seen as a way to help our nation economically and medically. On the other end, there are also many people who support the criminalization of marijuana and believe it is a drug that should remain illegal or else further use of the drug may increase and become dangerous. There was a time in history when the use of marijuana was quite popular until it became illegal, like many other substances, it did not stop people from using. The question still remains, should marijuana be legalized? Throughout this writing piece, information regarding different views and opinions on the legalization of marijuana will be presented, along with positive and negative effects this would have on our nation economically and medically.…
