Learning Styles Exercise
Soheil Khanizadeh
BUS100 Section -541

After completing my learning styles exercise, I found out that I am in the “Reflective Observation” category. I think this fits me correctly because I am a person that likes to observe problems and then try to solve them as best as I can. Furthermore, I plan ahead and try to learn quicker by seeing which technique works the best. Overall, I feel that I will benefit from other modes as well. In order for me to succeed, I need to be more of an active person. This includes class discussions and applying the theory into the real world. The reason is because I believe for myself that learning isn’t enough. I need to apply the theory in order to become a master student. Another learning style I would like to improve is brainstorming. There have been many times where I just get into a piece of work without thinking of how I am going to do it. This leads to a struggle to finish and a poor mark. In order to improve, it’s best for me to form a study group and brainstorm ideas. In conclusion, I accomplish tasks with good efficiency, but if I incorporate some of these other learning styles, then I will truly be on my way to becoming a master student. Throughout my university experience, I will always remember that “Success is how high you bounce when you hit the bottom” (George S. Patton). No matter how many times I will be put down because of school work, friends, and other issues, I will always come back stronger and ready to take on any challenge.

My personal learning style is doing. I learn best from the hands on approach of getting in to a topic or job and attempting to complete it on my own. This allows me to see my mistakes and not have them be prevented before they happen, which allows me to note the problem and fix it. I find it much harder to learn using concrete experience and reflective observation. The fact that both these styles are much harder for me to learn from effects my overall learning style because of how I learn, just watching someone else complete a task is not enough for me to learn by.…

We are faced with many different learning experiences. Some of these experiences have made a better impact than others. We can attribute this to our learning style. A person’s learning style is the method through which they gain information about their environment. Research is going on all over the world to help explain learning styles. To me, it is our responsibility to learn about these different learning styles so we can appeal to every type of learner in our world. Howard Gardner has elaborated on the concept of learning style through what he calls “multiple intelligence’s” (Gardner 3). Understanding this intelligence’s will help us to design our learning environment and curriculum in a way that will appeal to all people. We may even be able to curb negative behavior by reaching people in a different way. Learning styles can also help us to determine possible career paths so we can help to steer children in the right direction. Discovering our own learning styles can potentially maximize our own information processing and teaching techniques.…

It’s important for me to identify my ‘Learning Style’ because it maximises my own personal learning; Honey and Mumford states ‘’each learner ought to understand their learning style and seek out opportunities to learn using that style’’ to do this. I’d say I’m very particular about the way I go about learning and I am not entirely open-minded in my approach to learning. I would say I am ‘’ Theorist’’ because as it states ‘’these learners like to understand the theory behind the actions’’ and I am very much like this in a sense I’m not happy to settle for the facts; I like to know why something’s the way it is and come to a logical reasoning for most things.…

How can you alter your study techniques to take advantage of your particular abilities and competencies as determined by these activities? I learned that even though I prefer to follow rules when it seems like no one is around my discipline always takes over. The learning curb I have in this class, and being not-so-computer-savy, it brings about many frustrations. I realized I have to confront this head on and make the best of the positives about my competencies to be successful at everything I do. I essentially have to look at it no different from a mission given to me by the US Army.…

Learning is a very personal experience for every person individually, However, I had not realized the extent of how personal, learning actually is in reality. I was amazed each week as I learned about learning with personal Learning Patterns, how each pattern works, and how my use of each pattern affects not only the way I learn; but the way I work, perform tasks, and interact with others. I was blown away by the profound effects these Learning Patterns can have, both positively and negatively, if not used properly. Before this course, my definition of learning was very generic, stating that learning is integral to success and that one should strive to learn as much as possible. While I know…

This exercise has taught me a lot on my way of thinking, concentrating, and contact with people. I never knew that these learning styles determine how I perceive my everyday functions. Until now I always thought of myself being a Visual learner, I have to see it in order to understand it. I am a see it, to believe it type of woman. After taking the self-test and reviewing the chart, my way of thinking is much broader. I do all three of the learning styles. I had to sit back and say; am I weird? Am I just able to learn, all different Ways.…

As a learner I realize that it has been a progressive or cumulative effect on the information I have learned, understood, practiced, and applied. When I first started in college I was very quiet, conservative and reserved in the way in which I process information. But as I have continued in my studies I have seen the shift from reserved to assertive but keeping an open mind when it came to learning. So, in the process of time I have changed my learning strategies based on my development as a student and the different situation in which I have encountered over the course of my college years. As a learner I know how to organize myself to meet deadlines and accomplish my goals but at the same time I don’t allow myself to go the extra mile to exceed in my studies. As a learner when I am given new task or assignments, I usually feel confident enough to do them. I ask questions if I need to and take breaks when needed. I think the best lesson I have learned is that taking your time to do something right always produces good results instead of hurrying to just finish, quality will always outdo quantity. As a learner I would rather do a good quality paper then a rushed paper to turn in something for a grade. I am in the doctorate program not only to learn and gain knowledge but also to take what I learn and make a difference. There are so many issues and problems the world has to offer and not enough people to find solutions. I want to educate people so that they become aware of what’s happening in the world they live in to prevent more problems from happening.…

Now I know that those may be helpful at least to some extent, but there are many other ways to study too. Hopefully, some of the new skills I have learned will help me to get a better grade. Some of the study skills I have learned include finding a study partner, which I have done. She is also part of a larger study group, which she invited me to attend once. I thought it was somewhat helpful, but they were studying for different classes than I had. They were really nice and tried to help me though. Having all the different perspectives helped me to understand the essay I was writing in one of my classes better. I also learned to organize my notes better and to take care of all of my obligations before I start studying so I can focus on the schoolwork instead of the laundry. Finally, I have tried some of the clever ways to improve my memory like mnemonics and rapping. I am not sure that they worked, but I will give them another try…
