Leadership In Nursing
There are many attributes and expectations of professional nurses that are standards for practice. These act as guide posts for professional development and serve as a knowledge base for career advancement. Four important concepts identified in this base of knowledge include: leadership, management, critical thinking, and evidence based practice (Kearney-Nunnery, 2012, pp. 3, 9-10, 127, 187). These professional nursing concepts are necessary in clinical practice, professional performance in general, and even activities of personal life.
Important Concepts: Leadership, Management, Critical Thinking, & Evidence Based Practice Leadership is an activity that is expected of professional nurses in clinical practice as well as in professional performance, where the nurse must set a positive example and act as a role model that leads to positive patient outcomes (Kearney-Nunnery, 2012, p. 10). The necessity for effective leadership within professional nursing to influence positive patient outcomes is known, yet there has been little research to show what types of interventions will create effective leadership or the process to evaluate leadership interventions’ impact on nurse’s clinical practice (Gifford et al., 2013). They also found that clinical nurses with five or more years of work experience had significantly greater critical thinking capacity than those with five years or less. Nursing competence had a significantly positive correlation with critical thinking. These results suggest that nursing education should be improved and tailored to teaching strategies to prepare nurses to think critically and can serve as a guide for nursing administration job training and nursing staff orientation
