1. INTRODUCTION

Leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective and directs the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent. This definition is similar to Northouse 's (2007, p3) definition “Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal”. Also many of the authors defined the term leadership according to Alan Keith of Genentech stated that, "Leadership is ultimately about creating a way for people to contribute to making something extraordinary happen”[1]. These leaderships are one of the most important factors for any organization’s development and its progress. In this essay defines how a particular model of leadership affects an organization.

There are many models like ➢ Action Centred Leadership ➢ Fielders Contingency model ➢ Path goal model
Let we will discuss about the first two models and how they are contributing affect in the organization.

2. ACTION CENTRED LEADERSHIP This model proposed by John Adair (1973) argued that it is not who you are but what you do which establishes you as a leader. A leader needs to balance the needs of the task, the team and the individual, shown clearly in the diagram below in his 3 circle model. The effective leader carries out the functions and demonstrates the behaviours appropriate to the circles, varying the level according to the needs of the situation. The leader whilst balancing the three circles, sits in his/her helicopter above the process, ensuring the best possible overview of what is happening.

Good managers and leaders should have full command of the three main areas of the Action Centred Leadership model, and should be able to use each of the elements according to the situation. Being able to do all of these things, and keep the right balance, gets results, builds morale, improves quality, develops teams and productivity, and is the mark of a

    After completing two different leadership self-assessment forms and getting a team member to give me feedback on my leadership I have each time had a result showing me with strong motivation to lead. I was glad to see that the feedback I had from a team member gave me the same result that I had received myself. Within my team I believe I fit into the Adair’s Action Centred Leadership Model. From the feedback I received from team members this would confirm my thoughts. My team members felt strongly that I give clear and direct instructions on the job to be done but are always available for support and allocate the work to each person’s abilities and knowledge. I feel this works well in my current situation as we are a very small team, and I have the most knowledge of the tasks to be done at present. My knowledge of the tasks has come from being in a situation where I was left to continue with the work and my line manager would come to me for information/data when the required it. Although this gave me a sense of responsibility and confidence in what I was doing, it was difficult to get a problem resolved when the leader was not involved in the work and had less knowledge of the tasks than myself. I often felt that this could have been improved with more regular meetings or briefings on the work load and tasks. When problems arose I would have felt confident that I had someone to discuss them with and could take actions when needed. From this experience I felt strongly that to be a better leader you needed to be much closer to your staff more available when problems or queries arose. One area that I felt I needed to action form Adair’s model was to ensure the communication between the group was improved.     Every organisation has goals and objectives which are essential for it to succeed in an ever changing environment. Ken Blanchard’s study of leadership identified two broad types of behaviour, directive and supportive, and the extent to which these are combined are demonstrated in Hersey and Blanchard’s situational leadership model. Among other things this model suggests that a leader needs to be adaptable to a given situation and aware of the social context in which they work. There are evidently numerous ways a leader helps their team to achieve goals and objectives and these are summarised in John Adair’s model of action centred leadership which defines three core management responsibilities: achieving the task, managing the team or group and managing individuals. To help their team achieve goals and objectives a leader must undertake certain functional responsibilities which include: defining objectives, briefing, planning, monitoring and evaluating, with these being continuous as new situations develop and objectives change. At the same time a leader needs to be able to recognise and encourage individual strengths, while being aware of and facilitating improvement in areas of weakness, an awareness of team and individual motivating factors is also crucial.     Everyone has probably played the game "Follow the Leader" back in elementary school. It is a game where the leader stands in front of the line.     British born John Adair, is recognised as being one of the most influential authorities on leadership. Adair developed his Action Centred Leadership model while lecturing at Sand Hurst Royal Military Academy and as assistant director and head of the leadership department at The Industrial Society. Adair’s work developed during the 1960’s and 70’s, so in terms of management theories, it is relatively recent. Adair’s work includes and supports much of the previous thinking on human needs and motivation by Abraham Maslow and Frederick Herzberg, but his theory adds a simple additional organisational dimension. Very importantly, Adair was probably the first to demonstrate that leadership is a trainable, transferable skill, rather than it being an entirely inborn ability. Adair’s Action Centered Leadership Model Adair’s simple Action-Centred Leadership model provides a great framework for leadership and the management of any team, group or organisation. Action Centred Leadership is also a simple leadership and management model, which makes it easy to remember and apply, and to adapt for your own situation. Adair describes leadership with a model of three circles as a functional relationship between the three basic variables of: 1. The TASK 2. The TEAM 3.
