Law Enforcement Application Essay Examples
I was nineteen years old when I started my career in law enforcement. I had applied at several places to attempt to become a police officer. I was told by a local police chief that I should start working in a jail or prison and get some experience, then I could become an officer after that. In pursuing a career in law enforcement I had to wait two years till I was 21 years of age, I did not have any college credits and most agencies required a 60 credit hour degree, and I did not have the backing of any political power to get my career ignited. So I had to work from the ground up to start a long term, successful career in law enforcement.
I went to the Sheriff’s Office in the neighboring county and applied for a corrections job. I was hired only a couple months after applying. I started in the jail on the midnight shift after only one week of training. I worked on midnight shift for about three weeks and was approved to go to day shift. I finished my correctional career on day shift with the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office after twenty seven months of employment.

I dealt with suicide, gang issues, and riots by the inmates. While dealing with these issues I had to bounce back quickly to keep the chaos down and finish the shift. Resilience has been defined as an attitude that enables the individual to examine, enhance and utilize the strengths, characteristics and other resources available to him or her. (Harrington, 2012). This is what allowed me to continue and grow as a young police officer. Law enforcement or correctional facilities in rural Tennessee did not have Peer Groups, counseling, or debriefs after a critical incident during that time. The only “debrief” we received was cleaning up the mess and hanging out after
